A Trip to Hell and back at Ijen, East Java
April 5th 2015 If you want to know what hell is like go to Ijen. The path down to the base of the caldera is steep and treachous by torchlight at 2am. We had our gas masks on to keep the devil and his sulphurous fumes away. You could dimly make out the fizzure billowing out acrid steam. How people make a buck
I went to Ijen as a result of amazing pics from Ali, Travelblog's founder. Unfortunately it was about to erupt when we arrived so access was closed...even to the miners. We accessed the cone of Anak Krakatoa and the sulphur fumes were overpowering. Thank you for this extraordinary blog and pics. I now know how best to access it if I return. But do the masks actually work?
