lock on a bridge

this seems to be common practice in places in Europe. A couple engrave their initials on a padlock, lock in onto a bridge (usually) then throw the key in the water. As long as the lock stays closed their love will continue. Bit of a worry when you see some people have used combination locks, much easier to open then to go diving for a key!!
