Beijing - Temple of Heaven

The sign is too long to fit into this caption ... basically this is the "Firewood Stove" in which a "clearly washed and shaved" calf was burned, before the main ceremony to welcome the God of Heaven. After the ceremony all offerings and ceremonial items were burned, watched by the emperor in a ritual called "watching the burning".
