I thought looking up dipthongs in my reference book would help. It didn't. My waitress asked me if I had been helped. "Atendieron" sounded like "atendiron." My guide says the "i" is a weak vowel and "e" is a strong vowel. A weak vowel combined with a strong vowel into one syllable is a dipthong. The way I say "atendieron" makes five syllables.
