A little to the W. of the Belfry rises the Church of St. Nicholas, which has recently been freed from the houses which clustered round it. It was rebuilt in the early-Gothic style about the beginning of the 13th century. Above the Romanesque W. portal is a huge window flanked by turrets."--Baedeker 1910. IMG_9931

Dawn found Monarch Empress waiting to transit the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen and then follow the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal twenty miles (32 km) down to the city. Arrival in Gent was through its Dampoort.
