Hanseatic style townhouses and businesses along Ulica Długa (Long Street). Ulica Długa extends from the Rathuzs to the Złota Brama. "The appearance of the streets with their narrow, lofty, and richly- decorated gable-facades, is still very antiquated, although a peculiarity of Danzig, the 'Beischlage' or raised landings with open-air seats, are gradually being removed, as interfering with modern traffic".--Baedeker 1910 I think I know what Baedeker was describing regarding "Beischlage", but I also noted stepped porches in Ulica Mariacka. What a surprise was in store at Gdańsk. I knew something of Gdańsk and its history as the former Danzig. My impression had been of a heavily industrialized and port city.
