Fort Amherst Lighthouse

Fort Amherst Lighthouse overlooking The Narrows. The original stone lighthouse was in operation 1852-1951. The present lighthouse was built in 1951. In the background are the old and new Cape Spear Lighthouses. "In 1951, two dwellings and the present twenty-five-foot-foot-tall wooden, pyramidal lighthouse were built on South Head, and the old stone lighthouse and barracks were demolished shortly thereafter". Peering out our cabin window at 6:30 a.m., I saw we were off Cape Spear, Newfoundland, with its flashing lighthouse. It had taken Caribbean Princess two days to sail down from Nanortalik, Greenland, to reach St. Johns's.
