"Its construction dates back to the 18th century, in the middle of this century it belonged to Don Sebástian Peñalver y Angulo, a lawyer, alderman and mayor who started it in 1751. ... Construction was completed around 1775, when it belonged to Don Antonio Ponce de Leon, the first Marqués de Aguas Claras, who inhabited it at the beginning of the 19th century". At 7:30 in the morning on Thursday, we looked out of our cabin window to find Carnival Paradise gliding past Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. The fortifications looming above the ship indicated we had entered Havana harbour! Cuba! It had been difficult for Americans to visit here since the imposition of the embargo in 1961.
