Bolshoi Theatre. Theatre Square, 1. "On the E. the Okhotni Ryad ends at the spacious Theatre Square (Театральная Площадь), one of the largest open spaces in Moscow, measuring 350 yds. in length and 175 yds. in breadth. It is adorned with flower-beds and a fountain, with figures (by Vitali) representing Music and Light and Classical Poetry. On the N. side rises the Great Imperial Theatre (Большой Театр), rebuilt by Cavos after a fire in 1854. The facade is preceded by an Ionic portico. The pediment is adorned with reliefs and surmounted by a colossal group of Phoebus in the Chariot of the Sun".--Baedeker 1914. EE1975087p1

An Aeroflot flight brought us from Leningrad to Moscow. We stayed at an Intourist hotel. Sightseeing in Moscow focused on Red Square and the Kremlin. I'd always waned to see St. Basil's Cathedral since reading about it in a vintage National Geographic magazine.
