The close-up on the glacier

The blueness of the ice results from the same effect as the blueness of the sky. As the light ray passes through the ice it gets scattered. As the shorter wavelengths are scattered more, more blue light reaches our eyes from the ice. However, by picking a small lump of ice one can see that the ice - like the air - is in fact colourless.
