The passage to Bermuda started out as a very pleasant one. We had the wind on the beam and were making good way for the few days covering almost half our distance. The wind then backed and came onto the nose, relentlessly for the remainder of the trip. It took us a further 4 1/2 days to complete the remainder of the trip with some tacking and some motor sailing (depressingly). This with a few tears in the genoa meant for a more challenging passage than we'd imagined from looking at the original forecast. We also made good use of some of the extra fuel we had on board. With all that, when we did arrive, what a delightful arrival it was! We were met by Alice and Caducues who left at the same time as ... read more

October 30, 31 - Boo The seas are calmer today and the wind has died down. The Captain is ducking storms and doing a great job. Today is the CruiseCritic Cabin Crawl but first there is the lecture on the founding of the EU to attend and lunch and reading and a little sun. The group meets at the Pinnacle Bar. We are 45 strong and some are wearing Halloween masks. The purpose of the crawl is two fold. One we all get to see the various cabins and second we get to party hardy. My cabin is on the list and it is the least impressive of the lot but there are bats hanging from the ceiling and the lights are out and eerie sounds are echoing down the hallway. We visit superior verandahs, deluxe ... read more

Norwegian Dawn was making a faster headway on the return to New York. Thus, we would have one day at sea going back rather than two. This was September 11 and so a Moment of Silence was observed for 9/11. At 11:00 a.m. the ship's whistle was sounded. Susan and I played Movie Quote Trivia in Spinnaker Lounge. We liked that trivia the best. Things were happening in the Atlantic: a Waterspout was spotted and the eastbound tanker British Serenity passed nearby. There was a third Art Seminar, this one on The Living Masters. The artists described were Yaacouv Agam, Romero Britto, and Peter Max. I'd heard of Peter Max and seen some of his work in museums. I had not heard of the other two. Agam has been active for decades and is known for ... read more

We enjoyed two sea days en route to Bermuda. the Atlantic was amazingly smooth. Hurricane Earl had blown the weather away and left calm seas. Norwegian Dawn was navigating the Sargasao Sea. This part of the middle of the Atlantic ocean is so named because of the prevalence of the brown sargassum seaweed in the water. First on today's agenda was the CruiseCritic.com Meetup. Members of the Roll Call discussion for this cruise from that site had set a meetup for 10:30 a.m. Norwegian make a much bigger deal out of CruiseCritic meetups than does Carnival. Complementary refreshments were provided and the Captain, Cruise Director, and senior staff stopped by to say hello. We struck up a conversation with a couple from Culpeper, Virginia, who had sailed before on Norwegian as well a Celebrity and Holland-America. ... read more
