North Atlantic Crossing – Rome to Fort Lauderdale, October 2018 My next ocean experience begins with crack-of-dawn Delta flights across country to New York, and then over the pond to Rome, where I plan to spend a few days, rediscovering the Eternal City. Being autumn, kids are back in school, the majority of “ugly tourists” have departed for home shores, and I feel as though I have the city to myself. I had a long 6-hour layout at JFK, but thankfully my arrival and departure gates were in the same terminal and the Delta Sky Lounge was right in the middle. It’s been updated a lot since I was last here a few years ago – looks good, the drinks are cold, and the food selections are varied and delicious. Sure beats sitting on those rock-hard ... read more

This is ridiculous. It is 813 a.m ship’s time and Susan and I are sitting outside on our south-facing balcony in brilliant sunlight. It is so warm in our protected little spot that we are only wearing our pajamas!!! For your sake, there will be no pictures of the event. (Well, maybe one or two. The sensitive among you might want to avert your eyes now.) I mean, really? In the North Atlantic on October 27? Unbelievable. I just had to write this while sitting out here because I doubt I will ever have this sort of chance in this sort of weather at this time of year ever again. But I am going to stop now as my eyes are watering from the light and when I put my sun glasses on, the polarizing effect ... read more

The Queen Mary 2, somewhere in the North Atlantic On board, finally, and settling into our stateroom is like coming home. Absurd though it may seem, we were just so delighted to end up in a spot where we do not have to move for seven days. Susan had everything unpacked and put away in the time it took me to read the room service menu and flick through the TV channels. Which is our usual division of labor upon arrival. Well, from each according to ability . . . . We then went to the Royal Court theatre where I DID get up on the stage and Henry V all over the place to an audience of one. The smell of ham permeated the air, let me tell you! Bless her, she is so patient ... read more

Hello as the Sapphire Princess sails north again, across the Bay of Biscay. When we were heading south early in the cruise, the wind was blowing and the sea was choppy. Today the temperature is about 75, the sky has been clear and sunny all day, and the sea is very smooth. We set the alarm today for 8:00 so we would get back into more normal hours and not sleeping too late. So we went to breakfast about 9:00 and got a buffet breakfast from the Horizon Court. We sat with a British couple and compared stories about Lisbon. After breakfast Janet went to the Knitter’s meeting in the Skywalker Lounge. There were only 4 knitters today and Janet only followed about half of what they were saying. But it was peaceful and refreshing. Meanwhile ... read more

Hello from somewhere in the North Atlantic Ocean. Since there are no specific landmarks for us to reference during this cruise, anyone who is interested can still get an idea where we are in the ocean by using the following URL: https://www.seascanner.com/ships-position-queen-mary-2 We got up this morning about 7:30 and went to the Britannia Restaurant. This is where we have our evening meal too. The dining room actually has two levels and we are seated on deck-2, but quite a few folks are up on deck-3 on the tiered balcony above us. But this is actually the lowest level of formal dining rooms on the ship. There are various other dining rooms reserved for passengers in larger and higher priced cabins. We are essentially the “steerage” on this crossing. Anyway, Janet as able to get Eggs ... read more

It was nice to sleep in this morning. Last night our cabin steward brought us two milk chocolate candies, leaving them with today’s “Where & When” document today’s basic information, letting us know that it will be casual dining this evening and that the high temperature today will be 49˚ Fahrenheit as well as a list of activities for the day. This schedule has not always jived with the online “Happening on Board” which is supposed to mirror the published list of events delivered to our rooms. This has not always been the case. Since we were in Dublin, they’ve been alternating two milk chocolates one evening and two dark chocolate the next; which, has made Sharon much happier. I think that she was convinced that I’d made a special arrangement with Haysim and Intan (our ... read more

The plan had been to get up and to work on the blog for a couple of hours before it would be time for Sharon to scurry off to mass. Well, that was the plan! Instead, I awake to Sharon saying, “Well, it’s about time that you opened your eyes! I’m off to mass.” Okay, so I’m naively thinking that there will be plenty of time to get caught up. I do manage to meet Sharon after mass near the Hudson Room on the Upper Promenade; but, I just barely got there before the “Go in Peace. Mass is Ended.” We’d tried to talk to the Future Cruise Assistant yesterday; but, only managed to get a reservation for today at 9:45AM. So, we only had a bit of time to grab some breakfast in the Lido. ... read more

Today is one of our “Catch-Up” Sea Days; but, it seams that we are pretty much on schedule posting blogs for the previous day. We sort of slept in; since, even though it is a Sea Day, Sharon doesn’t need to rush off to mass on this Saturday morning. She’ll be going to the Vigil Mass at 5:00PM and she won’t need to go tomorrow; and, that’s a good thing because tomorrow is a very busy day for us, with an All-Day tour. We’ll be in Reykjavik and we’ll be staying overnight. We barely made it to the Rotterdam Dining Room before they stopped serving breakfast at 9:30AM. Another couple was already seated by the window at our table for four. And evidently, they’d already ordered as well. I ordered Eggs Benedict (again) with hashed browns ... read more

Some people don’t like sea days. It’s a good thing that we do. For one thing, it gives us a chance to catch our breath instead of going on a tour day after day to the point that it becomes a grind. And also, like yesterday, we found ourselves with an unscheduled sea day. We’ve been on cruises where fellow passengers would insist that if they missed a port it was due to some sinister plot by HAL to keep them on board to buy more things in their onboard stores; or, just to ruin their vacations! That doesn’t seem to be the case on Voyage of the Vikings where the norm is to be a 4-star or 5-star mariner and there seems to be an appreciation that the captain’s primary focus is our safety. And ... read more

I really love to cruise. My favorite part about crusing is the food. I have recently learned about history of cruising as well as some aspects of cruise agents. Not only that, I have been a Cruise Caregiver for 1.5 yrs now and I have discovered how working on cruise and playing is awesome. I mean I got to help some clients on cruises. I got paid to do it as well as traveling to exotic places and getting free rooms, etc. I really loved my career and very soon I'm going back to school to get my BSN-Rn Nursing Degree in January 2019. The aspects I love about cruising are: Food, Entertainment, Shows, Casinos,as well Cruise Excursions, Banquets,Room, etc! I really love to cruise! I love booking cruises as well as I enjoy seeing journeys through boat. ... read more
