Geo: -23.8858, -129.023The passengers on the Queen Mary 2 are mostly Australians with around 200 Americans, lots of Brits, a few New Zealanders, and a few other nationalities. The announcements, including the daily noon navigational report, are given first in English by the captain or the officer on duty, then translated into German, French, Spanish, and Japanese. There are very few children on the trip and not too many adults who look to be younger than 50. As we cruise westward on the Pacific, we have a lot of time zones to go through. During the first eight days at sea, we had seven time changes. There will be a few more to come having a total of ten by the end of the cruise. Twenty-five hour days, one after the other, have made for a ... read more

Geo: 17.1207, -61.8451We dock in the colonial town of St Johns, Antigua just before 7am. Adventure of the Seas follows us in and moors alongside us and P&O Britannia which was already here before either of us. We breakfast in the main dining room with a view out over the town. We have been here once before back in 2005 when we spent a week in Antigua. Our hotel was situated in the south east corner of the island but we took a day trip to St Johns one day. Ironically there were cruise ships in port that day and Serenade was one of them. Having seen most of the island on our previous visit we decide to just venture into St Johns today to do some sightseeing and shopping. As we don't have a tour to ... read more

Geo: 13.8941, -60.9686Our plan was to rise earlier than normal this morning so that we can see the Pitons that are located near the southerly tip of St Lucia. These iconic twin mountains are the subject of many a holiday snap and as we are heading to Rodney Bay which is the north of the island we fear we might not see them. Alas, even though we went to bed early the ship is docked in Castries by the time we get up.Slightly earlier tour time today and so we shower early and head to the Windjammer. I have cheesy scrambled eggs..a first. As usual we are early for our 8.15am meet time. It's almost impossible and unheard of for either of us to be late for anything. Peter and Patrick. P&P. Properly Punctual. We meet Shanga ... read more

Geo: -31.0529, -92.7246The trip started with three days at sea. We spent our time going to lectures, port talks, and shows, exploring the ship, trying all the variety of dining venues, and getting in lots of walking and reading. My goal is walking 10,000 steps every day. Philip's goal must be to read every book he has loaded on his iPad. There will be eight formal nights on this cruise. The other nights are called "informal" and the dress code for them requires a jacket for men, but not a tie. The women's dress on informal nights is a cocktail dress or “smart separates”. Two of the formal nights were the second and third night of the cruise. The captain had parties to meet the guests on those nights. The first one was for the Grills' ... read more

Geo: 12.53, -70.03Serenade has docked in Aruba before we awake. We are in a position near the container dock which we thought was going to be some distance from the main terminal building but we can see that it would only be a 5/10 minute walk at most. Carnival Breeze is approaching the dock at a slow rate of knots. She passes us on our starboard side and docks in between us and Serenade's sister ship, Jewel of the Seas.We breakfast in the WJ and manage to find a couple of seats outside at the back of the ship. True to its reputation Aruba is windy just as it was when we were here last year. Back in our stateroom we shower and change and remember to put sunscreen on before heading down to deck 2 ... read more

Geo: -21.0326, 55.2351 This was ourlast stop in South Africa. Durban is an even larger port than Port Elizabeth. We came in a little late as the pilot was tardy in arriving. He flew in byhelicopter. We watched the sail in from our balcony. We docked and were free toget off about 9am.We hadplanned to get a taxi from the pier and go into the city. However, we foundconfusion on the wharf. There was a long line of people waiting for taxis andnone in sight. We decided to buy a ticket on the ship shuttle bus which was takingpassengers to Ushaka Marine Park, located on “The Golden Mile”, a stretch ofbeach leading to the Football Stadium which was built for the World Cup. TheMarine Park was housed in a large complex containing shops, restaurants andvarious animal enclosures. ... read more

Geo: 16.7837, 96.1568We watched the sunrise from atop one of the ancient temples in Bagan. We returned to the hotel for breakfast and to check in on the Super Bowl. (Being 11.5 hours ahead of the the US east coast, the game was played around 7:00 AM on Monday in Myanmar.) It surprisingly was not televised, nor did anyone there seem to know anything about it. We got enough of an internet signal to catch the score at the end of the game at the Bagan airport, and then caught our flight back to Yangon. After a lunch of Burmese specialties, we spent the afternoon discovering highlights of Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, including its colonial heritage on display at City Hall, Victory Monument and other impressive 19th and early 20th-century buildings.Fun facts: Myanmar, which is about the ... read more
