Sometimes people just make your day! This seems to happen more often to us in Melbourne than it ever did in Perth... For example, the taxi driver who picked us up from the airport, who chatted away, advised us, demonstrated how to perform a hook term and was generally outstandingly friendly. Or the girl we met at one of our new favourite shops, Dangerfield, who agreed to help us make an ad campaign for Perth based around the theme of "drugs and sharks!"... or Sole, at the National Gallery of Victoria Art Gallery, who introduced himself as "Sole, your African waiter," called Brennen "your Lordship," and greeted me with "argh! I love your hat - it's amaz - argh! No! No! I love your shirt! It says "I love Tofu!" and there is the beautiful tofu being sad because you are eating it! Hahahaha...that is wonderful. You are a wonderful lady. I can't believe I was only coming over to comment on your hat!" He was also the one who inspired the title of this blog, as it was his advice to us, which translates roughly to "check out our freaking awesome sweet pastries!"
Oh Melbourne, how do we define
you? You are far more interesting than Sydney, and yet you lack something of the movement and constant busi-ness. Your eating is incredibly cheap, but your drinking; not so much. Your public transport is comprehensive, though confusing. You have a pretentious air about you, and yet you are so casual and welcoming. You like to capture all four seasons within a 24 hour period. And yet we love you, Melbourne, for your complexity and your contradictions, for your diversity and your style. We may just move here when we have the money.
Our days here have been fully packed - we have been to the DFO (direct factory outlet), the Docklands, Federation Square, National Gallery of Victoria, Botanical Gardens, Eureka Skydeck, Crown Casino and a whole set of tiny, random restaurants, bars, pubs, and cafes. We are both thrilled to have seen a Monet, a Manet, a Picasso and a (probable?) Van Gough. We also ran into (almost literally) Larissa from highschool, and went out for drinks with her and her partner, Dan, which was a fantastic night out! We were terribly disappointed by the Korova Milkbar, which it turns out attracts self-absorbed, superficial, whorish people, and is staffed
by wankers. We came out of the Casino $40 richer, and experienced "the edge" of the sky deck - where you are put in a tiny glass box, which is then moved outside of the building so you can see in every direction. Oh, yeah, did I mention it's on the 88th floor, and is the highest viewing station in the Southern Hemisphere?!?!? Terrifying!! But terrfic!
We are sad to be leaving Melbourne, but look forward to coming back for more exploration, when we have the funds. On to the Great Ocean Road, to Mt Gambier tomorrow, and to Adelaide on Sunday! Hurray! There is much driving ahead of me, so I must go and get some rest. I love you all.
