Tonga Part 2: Vava'u

Well this post has taken much longer than expected to get up here. I'll keep the text short and leave you to the photos. Vava'u was the treat of the trip. I got to bike through jungle trails, swim with humpback whales, go diving and lounge around on the beach. This island is off the tourist track and I really enjoyed it. We climbed a boulder that was 40 feet out of the water and 30 feet out into the surf.

I collected a handful to bring back to NZ. Turns out one of the pieces I collected was "brain coral" which was confiscated from me by customs.

We came accross a local street party off the beaten path. We hung out on the outside watching. In no time at all the host invited us to join in. Turns out we were throwing back beers with the General of the Tongan Army and rubbing shoulders with drunk royalty.

The islands are dotted with these playpens for the holiday makers.

At the last moment when all seemed lost we found our whales. We were more than a mile out from land in the open ocean.

Our boat pulled into the sea cave and we went swimming while the capatin ate lunch.

His name
Alamoti Tautakitaki of Hunga Vava'u. He was one of my teachers at Tonga College in the early 1980s. Very good man. He is heavy involved in community projects for the outer islands in the Kingdom.
