Sorry, I have been having so much trouble trying to get this out. We have been here almost a week and everything is quite wonderful and exciting. We had a good albeit rather long trip on the plane. The day we arrived was cool and cloudy, but not uncomfortable until the sun went down. Our friends, John & Betty Rose, met us and then, Kenneth Ranger and his family came and picked us up to go to Piha Beach where a lot of the church people we knew were having a reunion. It was marvelous to go back to the old campgrounds, old friends and go down to the beach where we spent many summer days. On Sunday and Monday, the Roses took us around Auckland - almost nothing is the same. John & Jim went ... read more

Stoppped off at Buller Gorge on our journey down the West coast to walk the longest swing bridge in New Zealand - and at 110metres, it really is pretty impressive - take a look at the photos! It got quite a swing going when we jumped our way across, trying best to send each other falling into the river below! Hokitika is home to the National Kiwi Center, and how could we resist!? It was pretty shabby though, but at least we got to see five of the famous endangered Kiwi birds that were pecking around in the dark enclosure. Unfortunately the piccies havn't come out that well because we weren't allowed to use flash, but at least we've seen them - couldn't really have come all this way and not. 16:00: All of a sudden ... read more

Once we got into our second rental car, affectionately named "Hot Tamale" we were back in action. This time we had brakes that worked, and a radio (plus a Coldplay tape we got from the cottage). Our drive was about 3 hours long. From the Bay of Islands, on the Pacific, we were headed west to Ahipara on the Tasman. Along the way we stopped at Matauri Bay in the Bay of Islands and spent a few hours soaking up the sun, reading, and snacking. The wind was a bit chilly, so we made 'pods' in the sand, to keep us blocked from the wind. The Bay had deep blue water and peach sand. Sailboats filled the horizon, as this region is one of the best places to sail in the world. After Matauri we stopped ... read more

We get up, put our bags in storage at the hotel and go to get something to eat before we have to get on our bus to Akaroa. Back at the hotel we leave our big bags in storage and take our packs on the bus. We travel for a little over an hour and arrive at a harbor. Two ancient volcanoes formed the Banks Peninsula and the harbor is inside one of the craters. The view is outstanding with verdant hills all around us. There is a lot of yellow foliage on the hilltops in the distance. It is a plant called gorse that was introduced by early settlers. It is actually a pest but it acts as a shelter for young trees then is killed out when the trees mature and grow taller than ... read more

And there we were 20 kilometers into the bush in our backcountry hut. We had just woken up from a night of wine-drinking and tale-telling with bunch of Dutch, Kiwi and English. Garth, a Kiwi dairy farmer, had given us lessons on how to birth a cow. Heald, a Dutch actuary, enlightened us with the immigration policies of Holland. And I never said a word about Bush. We were packed and ready for the infamous Tongariro Crossing, a New Zealand Great Hike at 9000ft elevation that crosses Hot Thermal Pools spitting steam and bubbling sulphur, volcanic lakes and craters, not to mention the volcanos themselves. Clad in rain gear and thermal jackets, we made our way, when suddenly, we were passed by a couple wearing jeans, a polo sweater and carrying a purse. Huh? We looked ... read more

We left Nelson yesterday after having been to the geographic centre of NZ. This involved scampering up a hill and watching lots of kids having their picture taken by a Glaswegian!!!!! Then we left Nelson for Kaikoura arriving in the afternoon and pitching the tent. This morning we got up at silly O-clock (5am, yes, all you students it does exist)to go see some dolphins. We were not disappointed! The Dusky dolphins were not shy and played with about a dozen humans squeezed into black skins and flapping about ineptly, making strange babbling noises. Honestly we are the most intelligent animal! Celine and I watched from the deck. Explanation - Celine had already swum with the dolphins, and I figured if I snorkelled I'd have a coughing fit and scare all the dolphins away or drown, ... read more

Well, my time in Wanaka was a little sort lived . . . I'm back in Christchurch. After a long conversation with my mom on Wednesday I decided that going back to Christchurch would be the best thing to do. Although Wanaka is beautiful, I just don't know if there would have been enough there to keep me occupied. There also was the problem that most places in Wanaka weren't going to start hiring for summer until the beginning of December and since it is a small town, I can assume that they would want to hire other Kiwis rather than some crazy American. I feel that this will be the best situation for me, there is always work in a city and I may be able to find a rugby team/club/group to play with :) ... read more

I have been having a good time here with Andy and Bluff at the flat. Yesterday Ben from Napier came down and spent the night with us, it was great. Team USA destroyed the Kiwis in beer pong 5-1, finally, yes, it was gud as. After playing Ben accidentaly kicked over one of the legs of the table, made of boxes of beer. The whole table came crashing down onto him, everything was everywhere, Ben and I laughed for ages, it was hilarious. Today we had a great dinner, Andy and Bluff are excellent cooks. Later that night we had brownies for dessert and watched Half Baked and half of Animal House before we went to sleep.... read more
