Milford sound
We went under that waterfall! we got wet I would like to take this time to tell you how much i hate sand flies. They seem to like me, they seem to like me a lot. Especially my right foot, though the amount on unbiten space is quickly vanishing, so they are moving on to my other foot, arms, legs, etc. Insect repellent is useless. (Joe - i was told that citronella does nothing either, by a girl in our dorm who had already tried that) Anyway, rant about insects over.
When is a sound not a sound? When it's a fiord! A sound is formed by water, making a 'V' shaped base and a fiord is formed by glaciers, forming a 'U' shaped base. Milford sound has, despite its name, a 'U' shaped base. There, now you can't say that my blogs aren't educational. So we went to Milford sound. With the bus pass we have, we got a free cruise of the sound. Gorgeous day again, but because it was so nice it was really windy. We claimed a spot on the top of the boat at the front, getting bullied by the wind. We spent the first half an hour just looking at the scenery,
Get my best side.
The Kea striking a pose for me there and traveling around before we came to the first proper waterfall. Two volunteers were given trays of glasses and stood at the front while the boat backed into the waterfall. We got a bit wet, but the two people with the glasses got drinks for the rest of us, lol. Then back into the wind for a blow-dry and off to see some sea lions. They're really lazy! They just laze around sunbathing all day. They've got the right idea... The last waterfall we went under i was more prepared for, i went and got a waterproof. The first one was only a dribble in comparison. Annie went round the back where it was a bit more sheltered, but she got wet anyway. I got talking to an Irish girl who was coming to the end of her trip. She had traveled the world visiting relatives, which to me sounds like a great idea, free accommodation wherever you go. I'll do that round Europe one day... Oh!! We saw penguins! in New Zealand! I didn't expect them, well i did, but at Oamaru on the other side of the south island not Milford sound. It was so cute!
We
Mirror Lakes
we stopped off her on the way to Milford sound stayed at Milford sound overnight, a stupid thing to do, because the only hostel wasn't very nice (kitchen was really dirty) and it was overly expensive, but they can afford to be, being the one there. Grrr. The chalet things were nice and overlooked the river at the back, but we obviously couldnt afford them. Suffice to say we left the next morning and went to Te Anau. We had a break here, just relaxed for a couple of days. We went for a walk to the bottom of the Kelper Track. We set off too late to do the actual walk but the walk to the track was nice, there was a Wildlife sanctuary along the way which we had a look at.
The computers being wierd and wont let me upload photos, so I'll do it some other time.
