We got an oppertunity to have a look at two of the best known glaciers in New Zealand, the Fox and the Franz Josef.

There was a great trade in helicopter rides to the top of both glaciers, but we decided to take the cheaper option of travelling by shanks mare, i.e. foot. We know our limitations so we just took the easy route to the faces of both glaciers, but it was still enjoyable exercise.

There are signs near both faces advising you not to proceed any further as it can be dangerous. Of course a lot of people ignore them and walk right up to the faces. Understandable and I was tempted to do so myself, until I just happened to be looking at a particular point at the foot of the glacier. It was while we were having our lunch and as I happened to look I saw a huge chunk of ice and gravel just come away, and fall to the ground. Not less than 2 minutes before that I had seen a couple of people walk point that very spot. I decided then that I had no wish to need to read the small

print on our travel insurance policy, so I choose to let Linda order me to stay behind the tape.

Even without getting to touch my nose to the ice they are a fantastic sight which a photograph cannot do justice to. If you ever have a chance to go and see them, they are well worth a visit.
