Milfors Sound is a famous beauty spot in New Zealands Fyordland region. Bar flying, sailing or tramping across the mountains to it, you have to drive along one road which winds its way through the mountains. We decided that the best way for the two of us to enjoy the scenery would be to go on a combined coach-cruise tour.

The day we booked the trip, it was a beautiful, sunny day. As was the next. However, we had booked the trip for the day after that. It started raining the night before and never let up. The walk from our campsite to the coach office took about 15 minutes and we were soaked through by the time we got there.

The coach arrived, and we soggily got on to it. However, the benefits of wearing travel clothing, designed to dry quickly, began to pay off. The heat of the coach started to dry out us, and our clothes. Alas, there were a number of couple of scenic spots along the way, which entailed getting off the bus and walking to them. As we had paid good money for the trip, and may never be back again, we felt

Yeh, this is great.
compelled to go and see them. Result, a couple of cycles of wet clothes, dry clothes, wet clothes etc.

However, every cloud has a silver lining, which seemed very appropriate at the time. There was a huge amount of rain falling and it had to go somewhere, namely off the mountains. The geography of the area is such that the water has nowhere to stay in or on and mountains and simply pours of it in huge sheets of water and waterfalls. On a fine day you would never get to see this. We were lucky as we were seeing the results of constant rain from the night before.

When we reached Milford Sound harbour, the wind was still howling and the rain pouring down. We finally got unto our ship and pressed our noses against the window, thinking "what a wash out". A short time into the journey, the rain abated slightly, which meant we could go out on board. I was standing by the rail when I saw the orange upturned bottom of a boat floating by. We had only gone a short distance when our ship did a wide circle to check it out. Luckily,

it must have been OK as we continued on our way.

As far as the mouth of the Sound the weather was windy, with low clouds obscuring most of the mountain tops. However, as we turned to go back the cloud rapidly started to recede, and we actually got to see most of the mountains in all their glory.

The day ended in sunshine and dryness and we ended up by seeing both sides of Milford Sound. Just shows, never prejudge a journeys end by how it begins.

No, its not an optical illusion or a lens artifact. This was the rainbow as seen from the ship.
