After outstaying our welcome with Alan and Louise in Adelaide, only joking, we collected our hire car and hit the road for Melbourne.

Its a long trek from Adelaide to Melbourne and we had underestimated how much driving would be involved. The landscape tended to be fairly flat which made it seem even longer but we made it to safely to Melbourne in time to drop of car at airport and check in for our flight.

We visited a number of towns along the route but unfortunately I cannot remember most of their names. One that sticks in my memory for two reasons is Queenscliff. One is the number of beautifully preserved colonial era buildings still scattered around the town. A lot are family households, all individual, and all better looking than most contemporary dwellings, at lest compared to Ireland. The second is the Queenscliff Inn, a guesthouse we stayed in, located right on the main street. Its a beautifully preserved building, whose only drawback for some could be the sanitary arrangments redolent of such an era, i.e. shared bathrooms. We loved it, especially as we had to use motels for the rest of the journey. They were clean

and convenient but that was about it.

The great ocean road itself was only a minor part of our journey but well worth visiting. The first day we came upon the scenic part of the road proper the weather was grey and windy, and it was a week day. Maybe because of this there were very few people at the viewing spots. The next days were bright, and the weekend, and there was an awful lot of traffic, both pedestrian and motorised. Because of this it sometimes felt like being part of a moving escelator as the pathways to and from the viewpoints are strictly defined and controlled. Still. this is probably necessary to minimise erosion.

Despite this views of the stacks are impressive and certainly warrant a visit if you are ever in Melbourne.

I think they mean Mars in Australia. Other than this sign they did not seem to make too much fuss of their confectionary heritage in Bellarat.

Linda about to get wet feet. Two shipwrecked survivors were washed ashore here about 100 years ago. Astonishingly, the man climbed to the top of the cliff and was found by some ranchers. Considering the scale of the landscape and the tiny number of people in it, they were very lucky people.
