Following a few more days of drunkeness and cultures in Wellington (my favourite NZ city so far) - where I meet up with a few guys from the orchard, and even the owners - I finally made it across the Cook Strait to the South Island. The crossing is well known as being highly dangerous, but also beautiful as you enter into the Marlborough Sounds. This means 'fijords' for those of you as uniformed as I. Alas on the day I ventured across its was very safe, calm, and hoggy as hell! You could literally see nothing and we were amused instead by the captain calling us on deck to see the dolphins, and realising that the island is not really south but in fact west of the north! Getting the ferry across did fell like ... read more

It had been raining in the night & looked like it wouldn't let up for the rest of the day - it was like the Greymouth we remembered. We left Global Village Backpackers with a new passenger, Randi who was travelling in the same direction & wanted to stay at The Old Slaughterhouse having had a similar recommendation to us. After stocking up on grub at the supermarket we headed north along the west coast. Punakaki was our first stop & luckily the rain had cleared leaving bright sunshine over the rugged coastline. The Pancake Rocks are funnily enough rock formations that look like stacks of pancakes that are continually eroded by the rough Tasman Sea. In between the pancakes are several blowholes which given the right conditions (a high tide & south westerly swell) spurt ... read more

I heard about this great hostel from a couple at Kinloch lodge so I booked two nights here before I left. I wanted to visit Punakiki because it has a rugged coastline and the famous "Blow Holes" where the pounding surf surges through vertical holes in the sandstone and blows up into the sky. Quite dramatic. Anyway I arrived yesterday to a rainforest retreat surrounded by native forest and 8 minutes from an incredible beach. I'm staying in a small A-frame that has windows on the ceiling that look up into the forest and the sky. I can see the stars at night. I have to walk a small trail into my oasis through forest and past other well hidden retreats. My place doesn't have electricity so last night I lit 10 small candles and read ... read more

From Greymouth up to Westport This has proved to be not as bad as the prospect looked. The road is not too hilly, the weather is not too wet (in fact it has been dry nearly all the time), it has not been cold (in fact we are now avoiding a very hot sun out there) and the welcome has been just as good as everywhere. We even swam in the sea and it is not too cold. We swam in the Nile river which seemed warm. We rented a small house just on the beach at Charleston, a very small place which used to have 18,000 there in the 19th century. Further north to Westport before we head inland to make our slow way up to Nelson which Lesley assures Michael is the best place ... read more

Punakiaki is famous for its 'pancake' rocks. So called because the limestone rocks have weathered to resemble stacks of pancakes. At high tide the sea is forced through blowholes in the rocks to give spectacular effects.... read more

It's stopped raining! The grey clouds are gone and it is all blue skies. In some ways that is typical as we were left the glaciers today but it can't be helped. We are in Punakiaki now which is further north up the coast. We are in this really cool hostel that is situated in the rainforest. It is not one building but lots of small cabins each with its own kitchen and stuff. The views out of the windows are great. We went to the Pancake Rocks earlier (which is what a lot of people come here to see) and they were great. One of my favourite things so far. They are these tall rocks that are actually stacks of rocks (I assume they are supposed to look like pancakes). There are lots of blow ... read more

Stenformationerna i havet ... read more

22.11.05 It was another sunny day so we planned to lay on Kaiteriteri beach, but it was a little breezy so we moved on. Along the way we had a look at Little Kaiteriteri beach which was pretty. We carried on to a little town called Murchinson where we went to have a look at Bullers Gorge, which has the longest swing bridge in New Zealand. We went across the bridge ($5 just to walk over or $35 for other ways that you will find out about later) through the annoying, biting sand flies, and then had a walk around the short track. To come back you can either go across the bridge again, sit in a chair and zip wire across or zip wire in the style of superman, (this is what the $35 is ... read more

Rich and I got up early and met Alison, Andre’s wife, who cooked us a delicious breakfast featuring bacon and eggs, homemade muesli with freshly-made yoghurt, tomatoes from the garden. I tried some Vegemite on toast - VERY salty and definitely a taste I’m not likely to acquire. Then our fellow guests Penny and Greg arose, and it turned out they were from Santa Barbara so we were an all-California contingent. The property was wonderful - great vistas, lovely gardens, very warm hospitality. One mistake Rich and I made was not discovering the chocolates in the bathroom before turning on the powerful bathroom heater… As we enjoyed the common room, Alison excused herself to feed the calves. Penny and Greg said goodbye and hit the road, and about ½ hour later we said our goodbyes to ... read more

Great journey today - travelling west. Stopped en-route at Punakiaki to visit the Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes - not the right weather/tidal conditions to see the Blow Holes in action, but the rocks are very impressive nevertheless! Stopped the night in Westport and enjoyed watching the Kiwis thrash the Wallabies to win the Tri Nation! Were included in the activities by the locals who encouraged Craig and I to warble away drunkenly to 500miles on the Karoke!!! Got a round of applause from the not too tone death Kiwis!! Met two smashing ladies Alice and Wilma who we imagined were very wild in their youth!! ... read more
