We next headed down to Franz Josef to look at the Glacier. On the 21st it was shitty weather and slightly rainy and really foggy. We still walked out 10 min to go look at Franz Josef in the fog. Then we stayed at the Rain Forest Hotel/Backpackers. We were going to stay in the dorms but there was a large tour group there that night an the two guys we got put with we kinda smelly so we upgraded to a en-suite dorm room. A four person room with an attached bathroom. We ended up getting this to ourselfs and it was well worth the extra $2. The motel part of this place had tree houses that were fully equiped. Didn't go look for them though so I'm not sure if it was true. They ... read more

After leaving Punakaiki we bombed on to Glacier country. On the West Coast of New Zealand there are two huge glaciers: Franz Joseph and Fox. Compared to other glaciers in the world these ones really motor, they can move upto six metres a day which is a collosal amount in glacier terms (so i've heard), indeed there have been days when the Cookmeister would struggle to move 6 metres in a day! The drive from Punakaiki was absolutely amazing for scenery (just like everywhere in New Zealand we've seen). It seems that Aslan is on the move because we saw hundreds of sheep walking along the side of a mountain away from the icy hills towards the green ones! I managed to make Dan believe that there are more sheep in New Zeland than people in ... read more

Having spent most of yesterday afternoon in bed, and most of this morning in the bathroom perhaps accepting Helen's offer of a lift to Fox Glacier was a little foolish, but I wanted to see at least some of it before moving on. After arriving in the small township of Fox, and having gotten the twanging of Banjos out of my ears I hitched down to lake Matheson with the local skydiving operators pickup. I did a 1 1/2 hour stroll around the lake, before heading back into town. Lake Matheson is famous for appearing on many a NZ postcard with Mount Cook reflected perfectly in its mirror like waters. However today was not a postcard day, and while the view was terrific my photo clearly showed a reflection of clouds - and no Mt Cook ... read more

Sidebar Story Before we headed north to the Glaciers I should mention a moment that made us laugh in Queenstown. Unwilling to pay for accommodation for the night, Matt and I slept in my car. So, we found a spot in a street a few blocks from the main street and settled down for the night. At about 820am we got a knock on the window "My name's Dave, I'm from the Council" - Now, had he not had a broad kiwi accent he would have deserved a punch in the face for that line alone. "You can't sleep here - next time it'll be a $400 fine". Next time. "Right-o" I thought - like we'd planned to do it again. "And" he continued "there's a puddle of p*ss at the back of your car, I ... read more

While still in her work uniform, Mindy jumped into the back of the Honda for a relaxed trip to Queenstown. However, as soon as we hit 100 kph, the super “air-conditioning” system (aka: windows down) kicked in, making the back seat an icebox. After a brief stop for dinner, we rotated seats and headed south on our high-speed tiki tour of the South Island. After all, Brian Gonci was only in New Zealand for a short stay. Night had fallen by the time we arrived at Lake Tekapo, a highland lake in the heart of the South Island. Fittingly, the name Tekapo is derived from Maori words Taka (sleeping mat) and Po (night). The night sky was unforgettable as we gazed up from our tent site in the pines. While admiring the Southern Cross and Milky ... read more

An early start to go and hike on the Fox Glacier itself with the help of Alpine Guides who took us on an old 1970's Bedford Bus to the foot of the glacier. An amazing sight! A huge twisted sharded chunk of ice slowly slipping and grinding its way down a valley from the snowy mountains above. It is one of only 3 glacier's in the world where there is jungle round the valley surrounding the glacier, the others are Franz Josef and in Argentina. After a steep walk over rocky cliffs and through dense jungle we get better close up views. We put on our spiked crampons and climb up an ice staircase cut into the glacier earlier in the day by the guides. We were fortunate to be able to climb through a hole ... read more

Today was a very long drive to Fox Glacier village down the west coast. The weather was mixed with patches of rain storms but the scenery was still superb and the single lane roads (which New Zealander's call highways) are the best driving roads in the world! Useless for getting anywhere quick, but entertaining for the driver, if not passengers :-) We stopped in Westport for lunch and finally 8 hours later we arrived at Franz Josef glacier which we drove upto to take photos then drove the short journey to Fox Glacier and stayed in Ivory Tower backpackers. Proving that the world is small we bumped into a Slovakien couple who were in our dorm in Fiji, and we all went to see the Glowworms which hang in the trees near the hostel and, well, ... read more

Day 66 We woke up to a storm and it didn't really improve all day! We stopped off to do a walk to see some seals but got soaked!! We saw a couple on some rocks, quite far away but it was too wet to hang around! We then stopped at the Pancake Rocks and Blow holes, but again it was too wet to appreciate them! We had some lunch in a cafe then boarded the bus. We stopped in a town to get some costumes as tonight was a fancy dress party at the place we were staying (the Poo pub). We had to go as something from our country so we went as Bill and Ben. We bought some plant pots, a watering can, a flower and some choice socks! We looked the business. ... read more

Resan slutar denna gang i "Fox Glacier". Gissa vad den sta'n ar kand for? Har spenderar vi var nyarsafton, och tar under dagen en guidad heldagsvandring uppe pa glaciaren, i det faktiskt fina vadret. Frammat kvallen festar vi till det lite pa campingplatsen, och gar en promenad ... read more

We awoke this morning to more rain showers, and sure enough when we showed up at The Helicopter Line they said there would be no heli-hikes until at least the afternoon. We had the option to take a half-day glacier walk but that didn’t sound like much fun in the rain. Instead, we drove down to Fox Glacier and had a lovely breakfast at Café Névé, then drove over to the Fox Glacier terminal to take a look. In the now-heavy rain, Ben and Gary took two umbrellas and set forth on the half-hour track. Rich and I waited in the car, and 10 minutes later a hailstorm hit. We imagined Ben and Gary were making a beeline for the car, and they were. They were soaked when they returned - it took Ben’s jeans all ... read more
