It was another early morning as the bus was scheduled to leave around 7:30ish from the Rainforest Retreat hostel. It was going to be a long day as we needed to cover over 330 kilometers.
We made a stop at Lake Mattheson(Mirror Lake) for a hike, Knight’s Point, Thunder Creek Falls and Lake Wanaka for some pictures and to get out of the bus to stretch. Lunch was in a small town with not too many options so we had fish, chips, and chicken nuggets. It was the greasiest food and not that great for the price.
After such a long day on the bus we arrived in Wanaka around 4pm. We got a double room at the YHA Purple Cow Hostel which was across the street from a clinic that was open until 6pm. Pete went into the doctor to have them check out his stitches and I checked into the hostel. Once the doctor saw Pete he said he didn’t pull any stitches but they put on 2 additional steri strips, cleaned the wound, advised him about signs of infection and gave him more supplies to clean it himself all for 35NZD=$25.20USD.
We then walked around
the little resort town for about 45 minutes to check it out and also look for a new pair of sunglasses for Pete. Then we decided to buy some food at the grocery store for dinner as our room was like a quad. It had a living area, small kitchen, bathroom and 2 locked bedrooms so we just cooked our own dinner, enjoyed a beer and did laundry.
Wanaka has a famous movie cinema in town, Cinema Paradiso, so we knew we wanted to go there to experience what everyone was talking about. There were 2 options the 6pm showing of Avatar or 9pm showing of Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson. We chose the 9pm movie so we could relax and I have no interest in seeing Avatar and Pete already saw it in Hong Kong.
We arrived at the movie around 8:40 as we needed to be there 15 minutes before the start of the movie to pay for our reserved tickets that the hostel called in for us. The receptionist at the clinic told us the ice cream was great so I got Pina Coloda and Pete got popcorn. It didn’t feel like a movie
theatre at all more like a little café. As we walked into the screening room it was quite a shock. There were odds and ends of couches, recliners, airplane seats(YES) and even a VW Bug with the top cut off as the seats in the theatre. For intermission they served warm chocolate chip cookies so Pete got a Double Chocolate one and a regular chocolate chip for me. They were HUGE and GREAT.
I enjoyed the movie and Pete thought it was just ok. Neither of us had heard of it as we are pretty out of the loop on things going on in the US unless it is HUGE and makes it to China.
We got back to the hostel around 11:45pm to crash as we needed to be up for the bus leaving at 8:45am. Not much sleeping in on this trip so far.
