After a nice couple of days in Wellington we boarded the ferry to Picton on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I was deeply sunk in the adventures of Tolkien's The Hobbit when we decided to go on deck and suck in these stunning views of all the sounds and bays entering Picton. It was then when I shot this image which made me think of my adventurous uncle's and his partner's almost-around-the-world sailing trip. Hope the two of you like the picture!: ) Isabel and I spent a couple of days in Picton hiring a kayak and playing minigolf. The water in the bay was certainly refreshing but since we rowed for nearly an hour we needed some kind of cooldown. Kayaking is such a nice way to get around, you can go to untouched places you'd ... read more

Thursday 6th March - left Marahau and headed for Golden Bay and onwards to Whararike Beach. En route we thought we would refuel and restock with food at Collingwood. The town was more like a sleepy hamlet complete with sleepy dog lying in the middle of the road - could have featured in a spaghetti western movie! The road skirted the Tasman Sea similar to the Carmargue but with hundreds of black swans instead of Flamingoes. Ran out of Tarmac and then on to gravel for the last 6km. Parked and set off on foot to Wharariki beach - WOW - amazing huge sand dunes which had been sculpted by the wind. Miles of empty beach ponded by the waves - would have been easy to have stayed longer. Back in the van retraced our route ... read more

Wednesday 25th December, 2013. Christmas Day in Golden Bay, South Island, New Zealand We loaded the car and set off for the drive to Golden Bay. This bay is located north of the Abel Tasman National Park and its name reflects the riches of the area. Plentiful seafood and forest resources for the first Maori inhabitants, then later the coal, timber, gold and minerals sought by the European settlers. Now it is a mix of farming and alternate lifestyles. To get to the main town, Takaka, we had to drive on highway 60 over Takaka Hill which is a very long wiggly climb in both directions. We arrived at the YH in Takaka where we would be spending Christmas Day. This is the main town in Golden Bay. The YH is a very tranquil place with ... read more

First of all: ** Happy holidays!** That all your big and small dreams may come true! I was wondering what's happening in the world and in your world. Keep me updated. For about 4 weeks I've been a "resident" of Rainbow Valley. A community that started with idealistic hippy ideas but is now a example for modern society. Everybody has his own house with a fixed line and internet. There's running water and electricity, if you were wondering... The people work together, share land and stock together and have meetings. They are for 70% selfsustainable (the key word in New Zealand). It's a place of peace and love, in it's pure form. The first day Beth, a girl that returned after years of absent, gave me a guided tour through the community. I met most inhabitants ... read more

November 12: Heute schlafen ... read more

... read more

Long time, no see! It was impossible to get an internet access..you can tell we are in South Island :) So after the sail from Wellington to Picton we stopped in Blenheim which is known for good seasonal work. We slept in a free camp in Robin Hood Bay and drove through Queen Charlotte Rd towards Nelson and Richmond. We did lots of fishing but the see is becoming a little rough over here. Lucas caught a baby shark by its tail in Okiwi Bay haha. Lucas was lucky up in Pohara where he caught 2 Kahawai fish! One thing I noticed about South Island is that it is full of cicadas! They are so unbelievable loud! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada I loved a Rabbit Island which is a very quiet and beautiful island. We did some sunbathing there..We ... read more
