Stewart Island 14th - 18th March 2009 Stewart Island is very remote and beautiful. We visited Ulva island which is a pest-free island (don't know how Rob was allowed on there!) where the birdlife is prolific. We caught a water taxi there and spent over 4 hours walking around watching the birds and enjoying the beaches. The next day we went kayaking along the Paterson Inlet, just the two of us. It was the first time we had been on kayaks on our own and the first time we had a kayak each, rather than a double one. It was great fun. We stopped on a little beach and did some photos for Mothers' Day cards we were sending. My best day was the third day when we caught another water taxi which took us to ... read more

Sunday 15th March - Drove down to Invercargill - went up the Water Tower - only open on Sunday afternoons - Lyn overcame her fear of heights by looking through the cracks in the floor!!!!! Onwards to Bluff - the oldest European settlement in NZ ready to catch the morning catamaran to Stewart Island. Monday 16th March - Weather very foggy so couldn’t see much on the 1 hour trip over to the island across the Forveaux Straits, fortunately when we arrived it had started to lift. Took a bus trip round the Island - all 15Km - no roads on threequarters of the Island the rest being a National Park. Bus driver full of Kiwi wit, knew everybody (only 350 people live on the Island) everybody waved at us and we waved back including the ... read more

Hey All, When we first read about this track we decided against it because it sounded very difficult. That same day we came across a Canadian couple who had just done it in 12 days and said if we had the time we should do it. So on the same day after completeing the Milford we were on our way to Stewart Island. A little info on Stewart Island. The resident population is 390 and the rest of the island is a national park. Over 3000 hunters come here a year for deer, wild pig, fishing and the occasional possum or wild cat (domestic sized). For this hike we needed two pieces of equipment that we didn't have. A stove to cook dry food and a good pair of gaiters for the islands notorious amount of ... read more

Luxusklasse, all included versteht sich! ... read more

Some people don't like flying - call me a glutton for punishment - but I actually enjoy it. Despite the highly intensified "hurry up and wait" atmosphere, I find it offers a respite from our daily lives. Looking around the roles of the people surrounding me become clear - almost like a play where everyone must wear their proper costume. You see the business travelers dressed in suits with black brief cases, an "I'm too important" fast walk and a PDA either on their ear or visible via harness. In stark contrast, you see the families, stroller in tow, looking anxious about the flight and weather junior will scream the entire time. There are young travelers usually in pairs toting backpacks larger than they are. They tend to look either excited and slightly trepidations, or completely ... read more

Stewart Island November 19, 2008 We left Invercargill at 8 to drive the 30 minutes to the southernmost point of the South Island to the town of Bluff where we were to board the fast catamaran ferry to Stewart Island. We were early so we hung out in a café owned by a lady from Buffalo, NY. She ended up in NZ after a divorce. She had quite a story to tell and we were good listeners. The ferry ride was an hour, but seemed like much longer. It was a rough sea today. The waves rolled up over the boat and we had quite a ride. It was a little scary to me. The boat attendant said, “This is typical for this trip, welcome to the roaring 40’s.” She was referring to the unabated wind ... read more

After a casual start to the day we arrived at Invercargill & headed for the Information centre to find out about a trip to Stewart Island and more specifically Ulva Island bird sanctuary. We ran into a few problems but I won’t bore you with the details. As night closed in and so did the weather we headed west along the coast out of the city to find some parking for the night. As the rain came in we entered the oldest town of the south island, Riverton. This is the town the 21st century forgot. We headed for the fish n chip shop to save me cooking in the rain. The chippy was also the local video rental store, that’s right VIDEO rental store. To be fair the fish n chips were the best we’ve ... read more

... So sang Paul Brady, and I'll get to the island in a minute, but first to Queenstown, a mecca for outdoorsy types who not satisfied with the lush forests, yellow beaches, thundering surf, clear lakes, abundent wildlife and lofty mountains, wish to throw themselves off a cliff, out of a plane, down a river. Whatever way you wish to challenge your inner sense of self-preservation they can arrange for you to be strapped in and pushed, for a fee of course. Alan and Sean decided to chuck themselves off Nevis, the highest bungee jump in New Zealand and third highest in the world, while I decided to simply surf down rapids at 'Roaring Meg' on a body-board avoiding rocks and crevices and Ali extreme read and chewed toast langorously. The morning of the jump I ... read more
