If You LOVE The LIFE
you live
You Will LIVE the LIFE of LOVE

From Lake Manapouri I set off early and made it to the Catlins Coast Via Invercargill for about 1pm, the Coast line is filled with beautiful waterfalls, sea lions, penguins & fur seals all in their natural habitat, I made it to Owaka just as it was getting dark & made it to a lovely hostel called Catlins Backpackers with an electric blanket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God the things you take for granted back home... Met a few people there and the next day headed off in search of this sea lion that I kept missing along the coast line.

Drove maybe 10 kms to Surat Bay and parked the car, crossed over a little wooden bridge and made my way through forest and sand dunes until eventually I came to the cliffs edge and there he was... all by himself...there didn't seem to be anyway down at first but I didn't come all this way for nothing so I kind of sand slid down the edge... my first encounter with a sea lion in it's natural habitat

pretty cool and it was just me and him and miles of open desserted beach. He didn't seem fazed by me at all, unlike my next encounter with a fur seal!!!!

Along the coast I came to Curio Bay to see the Petrified forest... Quote from dictionary for us all - (Fossil formed by the infiltration of minerals into cavities between and within cells of natural wood)... Most dramatically, the Curio Bay Petrified Forest allows a glimpse of young forest that was vibrant with life 150 million years ago!!

Unfortunately I missed out on the Yellow Eyed Penguin, these birds pair for life and always return to their favourite nesting site. They nest amongst the roots of forest trees, within calling range but not sight of the next pair. Penguins are the original innocents. They have no idea how to defend themselves or their chicks from predators.
