Early start for the long drive from Kaikoura to Dunedin. We actually managed to be on the road by 8am. Jen did the first stint of driving through glorious morning sunshine as we twisted along roads right by the sea. I was lucky enough to see several dolphins porpoising by a small boat out to sea. The road turned inland and snaked through mountainous valleys in which the clouds nestled. At one point we were in the clouds for a few kilometres but the sun returned. We bypassed Christchurch stopping only for petrol and coffees soon after. We sped through relatively flat lands stopping at the intriguing Moeraki Boulders which is a beach littered with almost spherical boulders which have some fanciful explanation in Maori culture. Checked into the very casual backpackers.
