A great day hiking through a different type of rain forest than the one at Arthurs pass. Hiked to a river, went kayaking out to the sea. Hung out at the beach - wonderful view, great big waves and breaks. Weather was crystal clear, cool and nice. Headed out for a 75K bike today, weather looking like blue skies. Trivia - on the hike we saw a 1,000 year old tree that has 101 separate species of plants growing on it. It was documented by a college recently. The most any tree known to have. ... read more

Yesterday I had the best day ever. Every year the small town of Blenheim holds the Blues, Brews & BBQs Festival, whereby 2 music stages are put up in the park and then surrounded by beer tents from all over the country (and Carlsberg - result!) and a few food stalls too. As the name suggests most of the bands play blues, but the headlining band were just churning out quality rock covers. Anyway I was working on one of the beer stands, which happened to be next to the stage - a prime spot I feel and what an awesome day. We could drink behind the bar, we were swapping beers for steak sandwiches with next door, I got given some vouchers to use at other stands when I went for a mid-afternoon wander, then ... read more

Day 81 (Friday 10/07/09, NJJ) Left Arrowtown about 9am for drive to Wanaka. Very frosty morning but very pretty. Had to take the long route as the short route required snow chains which we didn't hire. We still saw the remnants of three road traffic accidents due to the snow and ice. When we got to Wanaka we were disappointed, because the weather was not good, although we imagine it is fantastic to visit in the summer. Wandered around town. Drove to another LOTR location near Three Cones Ski Resort. They keep the main roads very clear over here. Drove through The Mount Aspiring National Park, the snow here, to the side of the road was a few inches thick in places. Took a 30 min walk to Blue Pools. Stopped at Thunder Creek Falls. Got ... read more

On Wednesday morning, in order to begin the long journey home, we were up and on the road by 7am. We first drove over the Crown Range which is the highest tar-sealed road in Australasia and stopped for a short while at the Cardrona Hotel (made famous by Speight's beer ads). We made it through the mountains to Lake Wanaka in time for second breakfast. Most of the day was spent driving through the mountains to the west coast - along the shores of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea and passing through the Gates of Haast. We stopped at Fantail Falls and Thundercreek Falls before breakng out of the rainforest into Haast itself, where we fuelled up and made a quick side trip to the beach. Driving north, we passed through Fox Glacier (quick stop for ... read more

8/3/09 = A rubbish day in Haast Woke up early today to check weather and see if could get a better visit to Lake Matheson. Was 7:15 when looked outside and discovered only grey sky; an all too familiar thing here on the Wet Coast. Secretly glad though; still really tired and fancied a good snooze. Scuttled back into bed and snoozed for next 45mins. Lovely. Then up at 8am, had porridge, cup of tea and read another magazine; all good ways to start a day. Got ready then and spent last few hours in Fox on internet. Internet = one good resulting feature of rain. Back at hostel then and ready for Atomic Shuttle pick up at 10:50. Bikes dismantled, bus on time and off we went to Haast = 2 and a half hour ... read more

Wednesday 4th March - On the road to Haast sun shining and the mountains looked amazing - vegetation very lush and lots of tree ferns. At lunchtime came across a stunning beach Bruce Bay - volcanic sand and tree ferns that came down right to the beach. Deserted beach and aquamarine sea - bliss - had a stroll along would have been very easy to stay put! Drove on and next stop was Monro Beach hoping for sight of penguins. There was an 1hr 15min walk through lush coastal rain forest down to the stunning beach - no penguins but plenty of sand flies!! so sadly didn’t stay too long. Eventually reached Haast and found a small convenience store to stock up on provisions - we headed for Jackson Bay which was down a 45Km no ... read more

Thursday March 5th To paraphrase Rudyard Kipling…In the land of the Itchy-Scratchy the man with THE cure would be king. Did I mention that I have hives from my waist down? I assume it is a reaction to the fly bites. Up early and moving on down the road to Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson. I swear, if I have to walk down one more fern lined path, see one more mountain stream, and stop to take one more breathtaking picture I am going to scream! What is it with this place? Took a look at Fox Glacier. It’s smaller but more photogenic than Fraz Joseph. Spent about an hour in Fox eating breakfast etc. Spoke to a biker, the unmotorized variety, and he explained that the part that broke on the bike the day before ... read more

Right so today is going to be one of those long driving days. We are booked into accomodation in Haast. The distance from Omarama to Wanaka is 113km (roughly 1:55hrs). From Wanaka to Haast is another 148kms (roughly 3:20hrs driving time). The second bit takes longer as the area is mainly mountainous. The night sleep was lousy - woke up feeling miserable. The single bed was the smallest single bed I have ever had the bad fortune to sleep in. My poor arm kept falling off the bed and the night kinda went tossing and turning. The showers werent too bad so I got refreshed somewhat. There was nothing to brew our tea or eat our cereal so we had to improvise somewhat. I dont quite function without my morning cup of tea. Day 538 (17.09.08) The last time we'd been over the Haast Pass it was cloudy, misty and rainy so we hoped that we'd go back over it on a nicer day to really appreciate the views along the way. Today the weather had turned out to be...cloudy, misty and rainy. Our plans to explore a couple more of the short walks on the way over quickly went out of the window and we were soon in Haast. Our guidebook lists one of the highlights of the West Coast as 'Mooching around Jackson Bay in the rain, the rain, the endless rain'. It was a short drive down the coast to Jackson Bay and we felt the weather was perfect for us to test out the recommendation. The weather seemed to get worse the closer we got ... read more

our last look at Wanaka was the Puzzle world, where there are rooms full of illusions, like tilted floors which make you look different heights, and perspective. Also a good maze, which we eventually found our way out of! And so over the Alps again, to Haast on the west coast, ready to run up northwards. The Haast pass was stunning, hanging waterfalls, blue water in the rivers - straight from the glaciers - and wonderful forests. at Haast, you can get a jet boat to take you up the river. What an experience, there is no road up the valley, access by jet only. And the mountains are so huge that you feel tiny. The river had enormous boulders in it at the top, and nearer the mouth, was full of trees that wash down ... read more
