Rob and Emily looking out for albatrosses
Dunedin 22nd - 27th February

It rained most of the time we were in Dunedin - we had forgotten what the sun looked like! Luckily we were on a brilliant campsite which had a log fire in the main communal area, a pool table, table tenns, t.v. room, library room, sauna, and stacks of games you could borrow from the office. We had plenty to do. There was also a nice walk up to some lakes behind the site, which we did in between showers. We shopped a lot in Dunedin for stuff for our trip on the Milford Track (4 day walk) - we bought waterproof over-trousers, a waterproof hat for Rob, a camping stove, camping pots, and gortex walking trainers. It took a big slice out of our budget, but we're starting to get excited about the walk now and it will be worth it.

Our main trip (when it finally stopped raining) was to drive along to the end of the Otago Peninsula, where we went on a boat trip around the head of the peninsula. It was brilliant. We saw albatrosses (on their nests and in flight close to the boat), penguins, seals, Stewart Island

shags (cormorants), and spoonbills. The albatrosses came pretty close to us and one flew right at the boat so close we could see every detail. We were all really excited. Our friends, Lyn, Steve and Emily, had never seen albatrosses before so that made it even better.
