The main reason for our visit was to spend time with Philip, Melissa, Luca and Lola. It has been a long four years since we were last together, so catching up has been a lot of fun. From watching Luca play football, chaperoning a school activities trip with Lola's class, sleepovers and walking to our local movie theatre and many meals together, we have reconnected and it is wonderful. Lots of talk and chatter around a dinner table with everybody pitching in - treasured moments. I will keep this short as the purpose is to share some family images. Enjoy and many thanks for all of your comments.... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637We really didn't know what to expect - Christchurch is described as the most English city of NZ, but what we saw was the power of an earthquake and the resilience of people - plus much beauty and a great evening of Maori culture. Thanks to our hosts' suggestions, we arrived at the Botanic Gardens by 9 am, walked around - even this early in spring the flowers were great, and trees huge. Then we caught a 90 min "Restart" tour to highlight the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and months later. The first killed no one, the second over 150, mostly in one building. 90% of the city center was damaged. Our guide was asked, along with many, to leave her home in 10 mins. The city is taking the op to gather like-items together ... read more

Geo: -43.5316, 172.637Last night we stayed in the most comfortable bed thus far. David watched the All Blacks and I caught up on all laundry. Great. We woke up to perfect weather and headed off at 9, as usual. For 30 mins we saw acres and aces of vineyards - some vines being trained upward, some just 2 strands horizontally along the wires. We didn't take the time to do any wine-tasting - most opened at 10 anyway. Soon the flat gave way to hills and we found the highly recommended place for coffee. The ocean is so turquoise and clear! At the cafe, the minute you left your table and leftovers, the gulls attacked. We were lucky to not lose anything.Lovely stops along the way, culminating in the visit to baby seals who somehow work their way ... read more

Making my way south from Picton I decided to start my South Island part of the roadtrip going down the eastern coast. No real reason for this reasoning, the drive just looked nice on the map and in reality I was not disappointed. Winding curves hugging the rugged New Zealand coast with its emerald green waters were my companions until I ended up at my first destination - The Kaikoura Peninsula. This area is billed as being rich in marine biodiversity and I was excited to hike around the area and see for myself what was on offer. The first thing that stood out for me here (other than the massive fur seal populations lazing about) were the large snow capped mountains jutting up from the coast just up from the sea. I cannot think of ... read more

After finishing my job with NZSki, I had 5 days before my new job started at Matakauri Lodge. My friend Jayne from Northern Ireland also had some time between jobs. We packed our bags, threw our snowboards in the back of the car, made sure we had our ski passes, and headed to Christchurch. The drive to Christchurch was unbelievable. Our first stop was in Omarama, the only "major" town between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo, about 2 hours from both. We wandered around and found some really bad food to eat (New Zealand roadside food is not the best). We drove through hills and plains, constantly commenting on how we could easily see dinosaurs living in these exact places. If you watch Lord of the Rings, we drove through Pelennor Fields. If you don't watch LOTR, ... read more

When I was at the i-Site the day before, I got a ticket for punting on the Avon. As they couldn't book me a seat, they said to get to the boat sheds before 10am to see if I could get an early seat. Getting there I left my hotel about 8:30 and started to make my way slowly towards to boat sheds. I headed down Cashel Street, Walked along the river, And waited for the boatsheds to open. Waiting I got to the boatsheds about 9am and got myself onto the first punt of the day leaving a bit before 10. This meant I had about an hour to kill so I wandered around the area. Punting At 9:40 we headed off - there was me, and one other girl. Turns out she was also ... read more

This was my last full day wandering around before the tour started. I made the most of it by going to: · Punting on the Avon · Rebuild Tour · Christchurch Gondola · Wandering Worcester Boulevard Once I was back at the hotel, I went to the dinner for everyone to meet each other for the tour. I met my tour director Lu and got my sexy name badge! I also met some of the others that would be on the bus in the morning. There was 38 of us, and we all sat down for dinner to get to know each other. ... read more

Rebuild Tour Before I left home, I booked a ticket on the Rebuild Tour, as I wanted to get a local's insight into how things had changed, and to see the major sites that had been rebuilt since the earthquakes. Brunch I had some time to spare, so I headed to the Cashel Street Re:START mall for some brunch, and ended up having a german sausage with onions. Yumm. Cambridge Terrace The bus took us along Cambridge Terrace where we were able to see the new Deloite building, and another building under construction. These buildings both had new earthquake technology for their foundations, which allows the buildings to move should a substantial earthquake occur in the future (minor ones occur on a daily basis). I was able to see the 'shock absorbers' that are used. Cathedral ... read more
