R: On 22 February 2011, a earthquake with magnitude 6.3 struck Christchurch, just a few months after a previous earthquake had already caused major damage to the city. This time though, the epicentre was nearer and not as deep. The effects have left a huge scar on Christchurch - 185 people died, and 80% of the CBD was either destroyed or needed to be demolished. In the suburbs, liquification of the ground caused further destruction to residential properties and streets. The power, gas and sewage systems were heavily disrupted. 5 years on, some people told us that it would be depressing, some said inspirational, so we went to make our minds up. We once again lucked out with the Airbnb we had booked - a smart town house on the outskirts of town. Our first day ... read more

It seems my whole dorm, bar one annoying girl, is on the move today as various alarms go off in the dark room and torches start flickering. If she'd been moving on too we could have put the main light on! Something New Zealand hostels don't do very well is lighting. None of them have the little individual bunk night lights that are a godsend in such situations. Actually one did, but they were so bright as to render them useless. I give myself loads of time to walk down to the Intercity bus stop and it's just as well I do as I'm able to spot my Dunedin bus go sailing past the end of the road I'm waiting on and drive at least three blocks further down the main road. Shit, they must have ... read more

I wake to a gloriously sunny day so get out early to explore Christchurch. I'm hoping to join a free walking tour, or failing that hop on and off the old trams. I've time to have a spot of breakfast first so find a cafe with an unusual setting. As I'm tucking into my poached egg on toast and milky tea in a kind of arcade area - indoors - a tram squeezes past me literally inches away! I mooch on over to Church Square to see if the walking tour is on and notice the poor cathedral, badly effected by the earthquakes of 2011. It's so sad seeing this and other old buildings either half fallen down and waiting repair or seeing just photos of buildings that used to be there but have been totally ... read more

We left Fox Glacier on a much brighter morning, with blue skies and sunshine. Phoowee. We drove along to Franz Joseph to have a look at their glacier, but just from the car park - no more risking wet feet for me. I was impressed with that one too but it seems to play second fiddle to the one at Fox Glacier - maybe I'm easily pleased. We were driving out of the area that would provide us with our last chance to see Mount Cook but it wasn't meant to be, even though we scoured the skyline. It seems we were fated to join the esteemed company of Captain Cook himself, who also never saw it. We took Route 6, driving through a mix of countryside - flat, hilly, mountains and rainforest, mainly populated by ... read more

A city that was hit by a hard earthquake and is still in the process of rebuilding. You can see what we're grand buildings there with substantial damage still awaiting a decision to be rebuilt or demolished. The city Catholic cathedral being a prime example, how nobody died in that building is a minor mirical. The city are trying hard to re generate and there a good plans in place to create a great city centre, but it all takes time and money. The Botanical Gardens look a nice place to roam, but is obviously weather dependant. Unfortunately we had a typical English summer day (wet) and never got to explore it to its full. A god spot to visit is just out of town, Sumner and New Brighton with a good beach and surfers to ... read more

Dogsitting now in Lincoln just outside of Christchurch. Interesting as the English bulldog has a tendency to sulk then hide in the garden. The mastif reminds me of scooby doo. Yesterday drove over to Akaroa about an hour away. Gorgeous little place, very French..the drive was very precarious going over the tops, at times 25kmh round the bends. But the views were tremendous. Went into the lighthouse, this was dismantled from the heads and transported to Akaora, there is a windup mechanism to turn the light around 360 degree. Quite fascinating. Then jumped on a sailing boat for a couple of hours. This boat was built for the Americas Cup in 1946, and its class won 4 of the 6 races entered. The skipper allowed us to steer and captain the boat. Managed to spot a ... read more

After 3 flights, and nearly 22 hours of travel, we finally arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand! We checked into our hotel at the Novotel and were greeted by a wonderful plate of desserts waiting for us in out suite that overlooked the cathedral. How sweet! Since our flight arrived early in the morning, we spent the afternoon cruising the city and visiting the botanical gardens. The city was hit pretty hard with an earthquake 5 years ago, and is still very much in a state of rebuilding - lots of crumbled buildings and new construction. We had a great dinner at a local farm to table restaurant, though unfortunately the jet lag got the best of us and we turned in early (which proved a little challenging considering that it doesn't get dark there until about ... read more

So I arrived in Christchurch very late in the evening and luckily Leanne came and picked me and took me back to hers which will be my base till just after new years. Lying on the east coast of New Zealands South island between the southern alps and the pacific its just beautiful here but the the damage from the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 and still very present with most of the city center still full of buildings waiting to get demolished and with some parts of it in stages of being rebuilt. The Cathedral the pride and joy of the city is still in ruins and a very sad sight. Today we went to Akaroa a small town on the other side of banks peninsula we went out sailing and saw the hector dolphine ... read more
