Making all the right decisions 16-18/04/06 We have a choice when we leave Invercargill; we can take SH1 direct to Balclutha, a fairly flat and boring route on a quick road, or we can take the Southern Scenic Route through the Catlins, a much more interesting (and hilly) route. SH1 is the sensible choice as it will get us to Christchurch more quickly and we have a flight deadline. The first problem with the Southern Scenic Route is finding it! We cycle past the turning before looking back and seeing the route sign which has been thoughtfully placed on the southern approach, but not the northern one. Once on it we quickly leave Invercargill behind and ride through farmland on easy roads as far as Fortrose. At this point we can choose the inland route to ... read more

had a fab final night in oz - stayed in a gorgoues hotel in the Rocks right next to the harbour - rooftop pool & jacuzzi had views of the bridge, opera house and harbour - which was a fabulous start to our anniversary evening !!!! enjoyed a romantic meal on the harbourfront - carl was a little sweatheart all night - who would have thought it !!!! anyway - we're now in NEW ZEALAND - how exciting !!! Christchurch is very english, very cute and quite small but great atmosphere. Driving in from the airport reminded us very much of ireland - all very quaint little "bungalows" with beautiful mountain views - the bids would love it here ! in fact there's references to ireland everywhere - loads of fiddly diddly pubs. It's a shame ... read more

Hi blogger buddies! Long time, no blogging. We have come to the end of our time in NZ, which is very sad because this country is sweet as bro. (we've picked up some of the lingo) The last week and a bit has included such highlights as, a trip to Milford sound, bungying off the highest bungy in australasia, 134M!!! and getting quite drunk most of the time with our fellow kiwi experiencers, who are a great bunch of lads and ladettes (we have to say that because lots of them have been added to the blog!) So without further ado, more piccies... Love Chris and Grace xxxxxx... read more

I have spent four weeks in New Zealand and yes, it was OK. It was beautiful and breathtaking, safe and clean and the people were very nice and polite. I cannot lavish much more praise upon it, so I won't. You know, sometimes you just don't click in the places you'd expect to and maybe you normally would if you hadn't been to somewhere you consider more inspiring beforehand. Maybe the truth is that ten months of Latin America moulded me and acustomed me to something that was full of life, zest, soul and warmth; but also it took the wind out of me, physically and mentally, though it was all worth it. And New Zealand doesn't have that life, zest, soul and warmth. It has rugby, bungee ropes, sheep and clean streets. I met an ... read more

We arrived in New Zealand safe and sound this afternoon! Soo many decisons to make. We have decided to hire a Campervan to explore the rest of the island. As due to our tight schedule of 6 days we simply cannot rely on a bus to take us around. So tomorrow we will be collecting our Campervan to drive around in. Rough calculations show that we will be doing about 1500-2000 km over the next 6 days! Camping again, this time inside the car- I swear I don't do things by half- I hadn't been camping before last week and now we are going to spend another week in a car- showering at campsites!!! Wish me luck- I am sure that we will have a great time, exploring the island on our own. If you don't ... read more

Yep, thats right - we have hired a camper van! And we're driving round the island for 6 days and sleeping in the camper! It was the cheapest way to see the island and the only way we could see everything we wanted to in the time that we have so that's what we've decided to do! Now, I'm sure you're all thinking that I have only had my licence for a bit and it may not be wise to drive in another country, let alone in a camper van but don't worry, Patrice will do most of the driving and I'll only do the long quiet roads after Patrice has approved my driving! Got to New Zealand this morning and it feels like England - Christchurch is just like Canterbury way - its really strange, ... read more

So it's been a couple of weeks since the last blog. Well maybe I spoiled everyone with 2 blogs in less than 24 hours. But I was wore out from the hours of work that went into writing and uploading photos for the last blog, needed a few weeks rest. Take a look at the following link to see my route so far. Each pin is a place I stayed overnight... Route Map So I was off on the Kepler Track the day after writing the blogs. It's a 3-4 day hike, one of the Great Walks. Spent a total of 3 days hiking 55km of the trail. A highlight of the trip so far, the first day walked from Te Anau up to the Luxmore Hut. It starts with the trail following Lake Te Anau ... read more
