Banks Peninsula
Me, Rob, Lyn and Emily with the view of the bay behind us Banks Peninsula, Akaroa 8th February 2009
Our 'big' day whilst staying at Christchurch was spent driving to the Banks Peninsula to Akaroa, where we boarded a boat for a dolphin watching/swimming trip. The boys opted to watch only, whilst us girls donned wetsuits and snorkels (highly attractive!) and prepared to swim with the rarest and smallest dolphins - Hectors dolphins.
We didn't have too long to wait. We saw dolphins before very long at all - one had a baby with it so we couldn't swim with them as it would disturb the feeding, but it was exciting to see. It wasn't long before we were in the sea bobbing around with a curious pod of Hector's dolphins swimming around us. It was just amazing to be so close to them. We weren't allowed to touch them, unless they chose to brush against us. Emily had two pebbles which she tapped together under the water to try to entice the dolphins closer. It may have worked, I'm not sure. A few swam so close to me - it was hard not to reach out to them. They were close enough to touch, but I didn't. An amazing experience. We
