Today I signed up for Black Water Rafting which is quite different from white water rafting.  Although I wasn't sure if it would be going ahead at seems to have rained non stop since late the previous night.  I actually wasn't in a raft at all, but instead an inner tube from a large tyre.  I donned a 9mm wet suit some funky shorts and white boots and a helmet with a lamp on that is like a miners helmet. The first test was to jump backwards off a platform (5m) into a sediment filled brown river - think the only reason I managed this was because the instructor - Jenny pulled my ankles back over the edge.  I am sure it was less than a second of falling but it felt like ages.  I managed ... read more

There exists a big rivalry between Australia - New Zealand, Auckland and Wellington. In my opinion Australia wins by a country mile and Wellington kicks Aucklands big arse in all respects. What is the nicest thing that i can think of when describing Auckland? Its a dull characterless city, under the impression that it rivals Sydney, No Chance!!. For me its just a 'pass through' destination nothing more. The sweet is'nt as sweet without the sour so as there is so much beauty and stunning scenery in this part of the world i suppose it needs contrasting with dullness in order for people to appreciate the gorgeous places that grace these islands, so in that respect i suppose Auckland has its uses (as well as to provide a home to all the bad-arse boyracers in Nz). ... read more

Kia Ora (a general greeting of good will & a diluting soft drink found in th UK) A visit to a Maori Marae (village/meeting place) started with a short bus journey, the Maori guide entertained us with songs and chants along the way and even taught me how to say a few things in Maori. Our bus was now known as a waka and we elected a chief from the waka to accept a piece offering from the Maori warrior that met us at the entrance to the Marae - following me so far? After the lecture about not laughing at or imitating the warrior's dance we were allowed out of the waka, where we stifled our giggles and watched the dance which resembled something like a chicken on a hot tin roof doing gymnastics while ... read more

Day two of the Kiwi Experience bus  Whitianga ------ Rotorua The day started early so we could be at hot water beach at low tide, yes this is a beach with hot water.  The water rolling in from the sea is quite cool but our tour guide explained that if we get the right spot, it is possible to dig and make your own hot pool.  This is due to the geo-thermal activity taking place just under our feet. So my team hired some spades and started digging - there were already a few people bathing in the hot water, and we were pretty eager to make the most of the low tide - we got stuck in near to the other hot pools.  We were digging and digging in various spots but there was nothing ... read more

Day One of the Kiwi Experience bus pass from Auckland ----- Chirstchurch After a late start we were on our way, the first main stop on our trip is Hahei Beach. Despite feeling quite unwell I signed up for another kayaking trip - which promised some of the best paddling in N.Z. The 3hr trip had aparently won awards so i thought I would give it a go. I was pretty pleased to see tandem kayaks layed out on the beach because I can hardly breath today. the relatives have a cat and I didn't bring my inhaler with me so for the past day or two I have been pretty breathless while I have been at their house - but as yet the feeling has not worn off. Nathan our guide was pretty anxious to ... read more

I really enjoyed sea-kayaking when I tried it in Canada last year - so I was looking forward to having another go here in N.Z.  Although last time I was in a tandem kayak with the instructor doing most of the work.  This time in Paihia the guide said I should try a single kayak - the main difference would be I would be in control of steering aswell as the paddling. I got paddling and the steering was quite tricky(possibly it as adjusted properly for my short legs)  - I just seemed to be going zig-zag the whole time making alot more work for myself.  It wa hard work and the sea despite being in a sheltered bay was quite choppy.  We headed out towards an island, the guide said I was doing well so he decided ... read more

As I am sitting here I seem to be getting eaten alive by little black flies that don't even have the decency to inject a chemical so I don't feel it! I am a bit stuck for words at the minute so this won't be a long entry and I have left my written journal back at the hostel so I will fill in a log about the trip to Dubai later in the week. I am feeling a little dodgy, I went on this 40knott jet boat ride out to see 'the hole in the rock' it was 17miles out to sea.  I sat at the front originally which was very bumpy, Dad and his back problems came to mind I could almost feel the discs in my back smashing together each time we went over a wave ... read more

Hiya folks, I arrived in Auckland around lunchtime and not feeling too tired despite only having an hours sleep between Dubai and Auckland. The journey was in three parts Dubai --- Singapore --- Brisbane --- Auckland. The first two flights were about 7hrs or so. Quite a cool part of the flight was getting to stay on the plane in Singapore while the plane was refueled and passangers got on and off. The cleaners came onboard and gave the plane a not so thorough going over. Quite a serious point was put across the flight intercom as we arrived in Singapore, we were reminded that drug smugglers could be punished using the death penalty, that gave me quite a shiver even although I would never dream of doing that, but you do hear stories of 'innocent' ... read more
