Once again were on the move. Today we head out of Turtle Cove from Mercury Bay to the lovely Rotorua. I have heard that this place is very nice and am looking forward to making an appearance there. We set off bright and early about 7.30ish.
Our first stop today was at some old gold mining caves. We got to see how they managed to get the gold and along the way there was lots of boards which explain how and what happened; you know like the process and everything. We got to go into some caves which were even too dark to see, we had to take tourches, it was fun.
Our second stop today was at a cultural place of the Maori people. Part of it is a school for teaching about how to engrave the wood, it seems it could take weeks, maybe even months to produce some of the fantastic pieces that they make. Im not sure if they have a time scale or anything but the time they were taking was phenomenal, we were watching 2 guys and the pace wasn’t very fast lets put it that way. Across from the engraving school was
a weaving school kind of thing. It had on display all the things that you could make from weaving, the variety was pretty impressive actually, they made clothes, to bags, to hats…basically anything could be made from this one plant called Flex... If that’s how you spell it. She showed us how to make rope our of it, it was so simple but really clever. In this place was also the hot rocks. This is natural hot rocks which produces a sulphate kind of smell….which isn’t good in case your wondering what sulphate smells like. It’s a natural process and had steam coming out from the rocks. In fact I think its called hot springs and there is only 3 of them in the world apparently. So the whole thing has been made into a kind of park which is Maori owned and the funds basically allow them to pump the money back into their school fund, so the money all went for a good cause.
Oh during the day we had a lunch stop too in a village to which I cant remember…it wasn’t that big but there were a few shops etc. We found this $2 shop
Out the side of the gold mines...big drop
Hansen, Ben, Charmaine, Me and Knotty...gota love the farmers and I managed to buy some ping pong balls and plastic cups for beer pong. Now if you don’t know what beer pong is, basically it’s a drinking game that’s lotsss of fun. We started the night off from about 7pm playing a few rounds of that before finally heading off to the Lava bar at Base Rotorua, this was pretty dead when we first got there bt before you know it you couldn’t get on the dance floor where it was so busy, it was ridiculous, but all the same good fun.
