I am so pleased we allowed time in our increasingly hectic schedule to visit the small rural town, Waitomo. We'd heard good things about the "black water rafting" that you can do there which had been described to us as sitting in a blown up tractor tyre tube on a river in the pitch black of a cave. Fun. The extensive network of caves in the subterranea of the Waikato district are formed as rain water trickles through a ceiling of porous limestone rocks, eroding the soft rocks and forming stalagmites and stalactites and all that.... The caves are also home to insect larvae which would normally be a reason NOT to visit the caves except these larvae are commonly known as glowworms. Vibrations in the cave trigger a bioluminescent reaction in the glowworm which in ... read more

Left Manchester on Thursday 7/9/06. The journey was very tiring and the food was disgusting. I have now gone off Chinese food forever. The Singapore Airline staff were brilliant and looked after me the whole time so didn't feel lost. Glad I didn't have any more time in Singapore or I would have died of starvation - Hot Dog pastie was like a plastic sausage in pastry and all I could think about was dogs missing from the streets so I threw it in the bin. After 13 hours I managed to get a Mars Bar on the plane but even that didn't taste the same. Started to feel a bit faint from the lack of food, but managed to eat a couple of bread rolls and some ice cream. Landed in Auckland on Saturday morning ... read more

Monday 14th August 2006 We went caving at Waitomo Caves, Waikato, which I was not really looking forward to. I had memories of very wet, cold and claustophobic school caving trips as a kid. I remember one part where it was so thin you had to take off your light pack and push it ahead of you, unabl to bring your ams down toyour sides, squirming your way two or three metres through a 'worm hole'. It makes me feel uncomfortable thinking about it now, but imagine me trying the same thing with my shoulder width now! So I was really pleasantly surprised to find it one of the best days so far! We were all kited out in thick wetsuits, white boots and helmets (see the super-hero photo) and it involved rock climbing, absailing, swimming, ... read more

Saturday 12th August 2006 Another really early start and we were on our way to a tiny place called Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula. We went for a walk round Cathedral Cove, which was really picturesque. The way the rock had been eroded created some amazing structures. We also stopped off at Hot Water Beach to make pools in the sand, where hot spring water came to the surface. If you got it right, the hot spring water mixed with the sea water to make a nice warm bath. We weren't brave enough (it was a pretty cold day) to strip down to swim shorts, so just went paddling. I managed to burn the soles of my feet by stepping in the wrong place (scolding hot water coming up through the sand...) I really wanted to ... read more

Hello everyone! I hope life is good at home, where ever that may be! Since the last time I wrote I have come back to the North Island of New Zealand. Before I hopped over to the North Island I spent three days walking the Queen Charlette track in the Marborough sound. The first day the weather was shit, in rained the whole time so I ran most of the way. It's a pretty easy walk because there is a boat that takes your pack for you from place to place. Also there is a mix of High end resorts and cheap campsites, you don't really fell like your getting back to natural when can have a shower, buy a beer and sleep in a nice bed. But the views of the sound from the walk ... read more

Went to a party last night, keep yer eyes peeled for photos! Having slept off the G+T's and microbrewed beer, decided to head south. Hamilton is about 3 hours away and it was about 1500hrs. ETA 1800hrs, except didn't anticipate Auckland bankholiday weekend rush hour traffic b***er. An uneventful journey down stopping only for KFC cause I was a bit hungry and got out the car for a weeand the smell made me buy it, honest! We found a motel in Hamilton where we were told the only room left was buy the road "but it does have 6mm sound resistant glass" Have they not heard of double glazing?! (I suppose all the salesmen are to layed back to sell it out here). Anyhoo said yes to the room, I can sleep through anything even Hamilton ... read more

This afternoon we got to go underground and check out some caves. We got to Waitomo with about 15 minutes to spare - just enough time to hit the bathrooms and gawk at some geegaws before meeting our guide, Savitri. We all loved Savitri. She was a young twentysomething Kiwi with a really charming demeanor. She had a habit of referring to the group as “sweethaats” and was very concerned about our welfare on the bumpy ride up through the hills on narrow unsealed roads that followed the ridge lines. “Ah ya quite heppy then, sweethaats?, she would call out, making sure none of us were carsick. None were. When someone mentioned how treacherous they thought these roads were, she replied, “Yeh, they don’t bother me, I grew up on roads like these”. After a 25-minute ... read more

Pseudo goodbyes... First entry may as well be something interesting... even if it is not strictly travel related! Finally finished Les Miserables after about 6 months or so. It will be a little bit strange at first I think, but more than anything, I have been putting things off until "after I finish the show..." and that time has now come, so I really need to get everything under control. But also on a positive-ish note I got to practise saying goodbye to people that have been quite a big part of my life for a little while. Not that this really quite compares to saying goodbye to friends and family that I have been hanging out with for years and years... But I managed it all without getting really maudlin and not even a tear ... read more

We had pretty much written off visiting "Hobbiton" on our round-middle-earth-trip because of the weather but the sun was shining today so we followed the tracks of Gandalf's wagon to Matamata and had a guided tour of the movie set. Although many of the structures were intentionally demolished after filming finished, more than a dozen Hobbit holes remain, including "Bag End" (which we went in!!!). The "Party Tree" and field, the lake, "Bagshot Row", and views are all quite clearly Hobbiton and our guide filled in any bits which were missing for us. It was quite a special and unique experience for us both.... read more

An octopus right on the beach! We were on the beach at Mt. Maunganui on the North Coast of the North Island and Renee and Bill decided to go for a walk down to the end of the beach. They were looking at the starfish and crabs and various typical things trapped in the intertidal pools among the rocks when Renee pointed out something in the sand by a rock with suction cups that looked like an octopus tentacle. We looked closely and could see that it appeared to be alive. We asked a woman nearby if she thought it was an octopus. She borrowed a little plastic shovel from a little fellow who we presumed was her grandson, and started digging it up. Up jumps this octopus and it sidles along the sand where it ... read more
