After a lovely stay at the very generous Crawforths it was time to head out of Wellington and start exploring again. First though we needed to stop off at the British Embassy so we could pick up our replacement passports. We weren't there for long though, it took less time to get the new passports than it did to get the photos for them developed! Rule Britannia! We drove up straight through the middle of the north island towards our walking destination near the Tongariro Crossing. The scenery was not quite as spectacular as the South Island and you could instantly tell there were more people as there was more traffic and litter around (70% of the NZ population live in the north island) . It was still a lovely drive and after leaving the rolling ... read more

Day 1: Friday we literally just climbed the mountain of death. If hell freezes over, that is what I hiked. Yet this is quoted to be “the best day hike in the world.” We ascended a distance of 19K straight up a cliff in 5 hours. With increasing elevation, wind speeds got up to 35 km/hr. That’s 20 mi/hr wind in the middle of blizzarding snow, fog, and clouds. My backpack strap kept slapping me in the face from the wind but I didn’t do anything about it because that involved moving my hands which was impossible to do at the time since they were immobile from the below freezing temperatures. So I continually let myself get wacked. I grew light headed and needed food and water badly. I kept ignoring it because my hands were ... read more

We started our NZ road trip with a 5-hour drive from Wellington to Tongariro. The driver was really friendly and so excited to share some NZ facts/stories on the bus ride. This wouldn’t have been a problem if he kept it to a minimum for just the beginning of the ride but he didn’t stop talking the entire way. Seriously, He. Would. Not. Shut. Up. I dozed for the first part of the ride but would wake up periodically to “this lake here on our left…” or “as the ancient Maori people would say…” or “blah, blah, blah, blah”. Eventually I just gave up on sleeping and blasted music to drone out his voice. I think our professors secretly got a kick out of our misery and were asking him questions only to annoy us. We ... read more

Right, I've left it quite a while now to catch up on this blog (having too much fun) and although I've taken notes to make it easier, my memory isn't great. We arrived back onto the North Island after nearly missing the ferry due to Mark being so bad at getting out of bed, and we headed to Nomads backpackers hostel in Wellington to meet Sanni and Sonny. Immediately we had a problem. We tried for ages to find a car parking space for the camper and eventually found one that was rather tight, squished in between an expensive looking shiny new BMW X5 and another van. Mark hit it, not the van, the BMW. He managed to catch the side of the camper on the front bumper of the Beemer, scuffing the lovely black bodywork. ... read more

Ok so I wasn't kidding when I said I would do it again! Photos aside I really wanted to summit the volcano. Rose early and got dropped at the start of the crossing, Caro went to the end and we will meet in the middle. I raced up the first part, and started the climb to the top. It took just over an hour and a half, roughly as the sign said, and the view was amazing, you could see all around the national park and almost to the coast! Sat on my bum and slid back down the side of the mountain in about 20mins! Met Caro at Blue Lake and headed back to the car in the baking heat, lots of smoke coming out the craters and a hut half way back that had ... read more

After a sad departure from the hut at Fay's we drove all the way over to Hastings to drop off Niko at the farm he was to work at, before starting the drive all the way back over to Tongariro NP. After driving for several hours away from Hastings we managed to find a nice clearing to park the car in and go to sleep for the night, despite Caro's fear of axe murderers in the forest park. A fairly cold night in the car but we survived anyone trying to kill us so we headed off towards the volcanoes, arriving around lunch time at the holiday park in Whakapapa where Caro promptly reversed Niko's car into a stone wall. Inquiring at the Doc Site as to whether we would need crampons and ice axes for ... read more

23. Oktober 2012 Von Taupa zum Tongariro National Park bzw. Chateau Tongariro Das kennen wir doch irgendwie, isn’t it? Die Route führt ... read more

Neuseeland und Atomkraft – ein no go.

So we arrived at the iSite (this is a tourist office found in most towns in NZ that gives you very helpful information or books things for you etc.) in a town called Turangi about 45 minutes from the national park. To be honest, Chantel mentioned this crossing to us and we went into the iSite thinking we would get some maps, book a campsite and go for a short jaunt the next morning. Nope, that didn’t happen. Somehow I was in there, looking at the maps/routes/weather warnings/trek advisory posters and I turned to John and pointed out there was no point coming here and doing a short walk. We might as well do the whole hog. I could see that John was no more interested in a long walk or dragging me on a long ... read more

23rd April ’12 From Waitomo to Okahune and the Tongariro National Park Reluctantly we left the caves area, still wondering if we should do the Blackwater Rafting Caving and set off to the Tongariro National Park – home of Mount Doom no less!! Aka Mt. Ngauruhoe. On the way we stopped off to see the Raurimu Spiral which was an engineering feat completed back in 1908 after 10 years work! . It is a railway line which spirals up through the countryside to get up the hills – Howard was very excited at the prospect of seeing this, so we walked up to the viewing platform – I even let him go first to get the first glimpse and saw…….nothing but the countryside!! Ha ha we did see the wire model dangling in front of the ... read more
