Dieser 3 stündige ... read more

I woke early, split my ersatz king bed (two twins pushed together) back into its component parts, and returned the two extra pillows and the hot-water bottle to Reception. At 10 I checked out; at 10:30 I left the hostel and made the 15-minute walk to the bus stop. At 10:46, the moment of the 1931 earthquake, the cathedral bells tolled. I focussed my thoughts on them for the 2 1/2 minutes that the quake had lasted. Then I was rather distracted by the promised "vintage aircraft" -- there was only one vintage aircraft, a biplane, but I could see it clearly, circling the memorial service a few blocks away. The bus that came was supposed to be a Newman's bus, but it was painted with a strange logo, "TraNZit." It was not in good condition. ... read more

Rather sadly, I said goodbye to Sue. It was time to leave; they needed the houseroom, but I was tired of travelling and homesick and I longed to go home. It had been good to be part of a family for a few days, even if it wasn't my own. There were 50-mile-an-hour winds all the way to Napier, and the bus swayed disconcertingly. It hurt my shoulder. We drove along the very edge of a steep gorge, with a lovely whitewater river in it. On the other riverbank, there were train tracks and the occasional tunnel. We stopped for lunch at a Country Cafe in Matamau, and I had an excellent lamb pie. Only two restrooms were available, and one was the restroom of a motel unit, opened up for use by the bus passengers. ... read more

Efter det dejlige ophold i Kawai koerte vi til New Plymouth der ligger i Taranaki, ca. 400 km syd for Auckland og paa den sydvestlige side af nordoen. Vejret kunne have vaeret bedre, men det var svaert at oedelaegge vores gode humoer, over ny bil og over at have fundet et sted at tilbringe julen (woofervaerter tager tit ikke folk over julen).

Wednesday we drove up to see Mount Taranaki - a lovely volcano standing by itself on the west coast. We stayed on a comparatively expensive farmstay near Hawera. Beautiful sunshine at the farm & we since it was only around 3pm we decided to pop up to the south part of the mountain & do a short walk or two. We were slightly worried whilst driving as we couldn't see the mountain, only cloud which turned into thick, low cloud as we got closer. Being British we didn't let this stop us & good thing too for as we entered the National Park we emerged into beautiful sunshine again! Most surreal! We went for a lovely circular walk around to see the Wilkies Pools & decided not to do the second short loop as we were ... read more

Hawara A&P Show! For those who aren’t familiar with country life, this is a regular fair which will mix fairground rides with outdoor activities such as performing dogs, horse jumping and, for this one, motor cross displays, with a barbeque, and all the latest and greatest farming equipment and innovations! There was also a toy display, the latest gadgets. There was even a photography competition which, sadly, I didn’t know about otherwise I’d have fancied my chances entering a few of the categories!! Anyway, it’s a big outdoor spectacular, which was unfortunate as today was the first day, since we arrived, that it absolutely chucked it down all day, and I mean properly poured down. Everyone was absolutely soaked to the skin, and it did make it a difficult day as we had the twins with ... read more

Helen out in the evening card making with the lady who had the bike to sell, so she advised we wanted it., I went into New Plymouth to buy her new pedals as somehow I removed her pedals before we came out and forgot to pack them! Still not entirely sure how but definitely my fault, so $50 on pedals, along with $650 on the bike itself, and then tried to get cash out in Inglewood but wasn’t able to, and had vague recollection of this having happened before when I was here, something about TSB banks not liking my cash card for some reason. Thankfully everyone is very reasonable over here, and so Mark is going to transfer the money over to them and we’ll pay them back... read more

Went to see the bike, and to test it out, Helen fell in love with it. Went to visit the friends of Mark and Tigger who had a bike to sell, and it was a perfect fit, just the sort of thing she was looking for. Wasn’t really in budget to buy a bike out here, but I had promised her a new bike, a road bike, so she wasn’t still trying to use a mountain bike for triathlons, and, as this one ticked all the boxes and, given our hold allowance, we’ve got the weight free to take it back with us when we return, it made sense to go ahead and go with this one. Once we’d talked about it all, it was agreed the new bike made sense as long as Helen was ... read more

A rest and recovery day, still feeling a bit odd, sleep wise, and woke a couple of times in the night, but generally trying to stick with staying awake during the day. In the morning, I put the bike together, and then we headed off to the warehouse, to do some shopping. Time to get a few bits and pieces ready for the trip, plug adapters, some novelty t-shirts, and some shorts as, somehow, I’ve managed to break 2 pairs of shorts since we’ve been away!! Anyway, once we’ve finished there, its time to head back and start getting sorted out. Time to unpack, set the bike up ready to head out and about on the hills of Taranaki once again. Not much else happened really, was just a case of trying to get our body ... read more

We’ve made it! Finally back in NZ. What a complete faff the flight was! Right from the 5.30am alarm call, we were up and about getting ready, and we got to Dubai airport in good time, which was then the fun and games started. We had checked in on line, so just needed to drop our bags off, so joined the queue for the bag drop……and then stood there for an hour while absolutely nothing seemed to happen. It transpires that they’d not been organizing people into the right queues and, rather than move those passengers who’d not checked in and were having issues with visas somewhere else, they were just sat at the front of the queue. About 45 mins later some extra staff arrived and open new desks, but it was still gone 9.10 ... read more
