Getting over the jet-lag takes time. It was hard to go to sleep and wake up at a reasonable time. Today we drove about 2 hours north to go caving. This was completely new to me and I had no idea what this was all about. We had breakfast and a couple hours later got off the bus in a very hilly and green part of the north island, called Waitomo. There were 2 choices of where to go and I chose the more difficult one, called Hagas Honking Holes (or something like that) rated 7 out of 10 on the rambo scale. Our group, about 7, was the first. We got into this old van that was just like the original VW slug bug. We went up a windy road, the view was great. ... read more

After a very long flight i have finally arived in NZ. On the plane I had many conversations with a nice gentleman named Aaron. He is actually the manager of the Telecom store right across the street from where my flat, McKenzies, is. We talked alot about NZ and many things. I finally landed and went through customs with was not a big deal. I got into the lobby and was nervous because my plane was an hour late and I was worried that I was going to miss the group bus. I walked around and heard somebody say "Brian?" I was wearing my CU shirt and it seemed as if a person noticed. To my delight it was Ashley and Coryn, the two ladies in charge of AustraLearn. I got on the bus and we ... read more

I survived everyone! Well what can I say about sledging? It was such a riot and it definetly gets your heart racing. I was picked up at the hostel this morning at 8am by my two guides who were quit the characters-they were a lot of fun! Driving out to the river I was reading the comment book and read things like "be prepared to kiss some rocks" or "thanks for rescuing me" etc and i was getting a little nervous (okay quite nervous). We were at the river and in the water by 9am learning how to use the sledge and talked about safety percausions. The guides kept saying that no matter what you do, do not let go of the sledge or you'd be going for a ride...thankfully I didn't let go of it ... read more

Hey everyone! I was going to wait until tomorrow to update my blog but to be honest I can't wait to share some of the pictures from todays white water rafting trip (which was awesome!). Before I do tell you about the day I should update you on where I have been... I am no longer on the South Island, I came over to the North Island last week(?) and am enjoying it here. I spent my first night in Auckland and then it was off Hahie where we were supposed to see the hot water beaches but it rained (hard) so we spent the night watching TV. After Hahie it was off to Raglan which is quite a neat place. It is a well known surfing "village" and there we stayed at a really cool ... read more

Today (Tuesday it was, I think) I went to the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland 30K south of Rotorua. It was so rad. There was this mucky mire and fantastic stink around every corner. Rotorua has extremely active underground thermal activity. Driving along the parkway, you see bands of steam piercing up through the hillsides. At Thermal Wonderland, they have craters that have collapsed into the ground and boiling mud bubbling from down in the depths. The sounds are incredible! Without getting into all the science involved, let me suffice it to say the colors, the smells, the sounds all combined for a wonderful adventure in wonderland. I don’t believe the pictures capture even a fraction of the experience… Go to Snapfish and use this account: email address = morgannebeck@hotmail.com; login = public. I've totally run out of ... read more

Yes its hip its swing its here its the kill a prawn driving range where you bash balls into a shrimp farm with different targets to hit! (i think Andy and Ray would appreciate this but not Suze!) Also nearby is the huka jet (thats a boat -not a cheap gladiator) which flies up and down the river at worrying speeds! Theres plenty to do in Roturua if you have the money as its not a cheap place. Also managed to view more geothermal parks and my first visit to a vine yard! waheeeeyyyyy! I never thought wine tasting could be so much fun - highly recommended! In the evening was treated to a great meal at the Poacher on the shore of Lake Taupo by Gems mum and Dad. Great food - steak/ prawns/ calamari/ ... read more

Roturua today to explore some HOT ROCKS! Wai-o-Tapu thermal wonderland to be precise plenty to see around here and ideal for a cold day. Stunk of rotten eggs though which you get used to after a 4 or 5 hours. Also saw a kiwi bird in the reserve and learnt about the maori. Popped into a sulphur thermal pool which is apparently good for your bones hence the reason im typing so fluently on this keyboard. ooo yes and nearly stood on a stick insect which gem managed to spot. (would put this on the top ten things to do in NZ) ... read more

After one night in the party capital, Wellington, we headed up to the National Park to walk the famous Tongariro Crossing (that's Mount Doom, Mordor to all you LOTR fans). The eight hour walk up and around volcanoes was amazing but nearly killed me. I made lots of new friends though as I couldn't keep up with the people we started walking with and met more and more people as I dropped further and further back. The next day we headed up to Auckland to meet Karl's parents, Aunt, Uncle and cousin who are now here on holiday. They haven't had time to feel jetlagged as we've dragged them round sightseeing Auckland, the Bay of Islands and now Rotorua. After a mud bath at the stinky hot springs this morning we took Victoria zorbing. If you ... read more

In volcanic Rotorua - you smell the sulphur before you reach the town - we dove straight into Maori culture attending a hangi (Maori feast cooked in a buried earth oven) complete with scary Maori welcome (think the All Blacks haka with less clothes, more fire and sharp weapons) and a nightime visit to some natural sacred springs (home to various eels and trout). We also visited a village buried in the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera (which is still being excavated) and spent the best part of a day at the amazing Wai-O-Tapo thermal reserve (plopping and boiling mud pools, craters, steam and gas).... read more

Well, I said goodbye to Elizabeth in Wellington Monday morning. She flew to Sydney to catch a flight back to L.A. while I flew north to Auckland just in time to catch a 4 hour bus ride to Rotorua. Rotorua is a natural spa destination with lots of opportunities to learn about the Maori culture and volcanic activity. Steam escapes from cracks and crevices in thermal parks, streets and gardens-it is everywhere. The steam drifts let off a very distinctive smell of sulphur and it takes about 24 hours to get used to it. I had the chance to view some of the volcanic landscape in the form of hissing geysers, bubbling mud pools and crater lakes of boiling water just outside the city centre at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Other tourist attractions include adventure thrills, fishing, ... read more
