I have managed to get to Dargaville in one piece, even that it really pissed down with rain. I had a day off of doing absolutely.. nothing... just went for bit of retail therapy, well needed an outfit for a the interview. I have stayed at Kathy's and Tony's. Karma and Sharkie met Buddy and Karma claimed Buddy as her boyfriend. Also they had a chicken sitting on duck's eggs... and the result was "Chucklings"... The interview went fine. I have been told that they will invite me for voluntary shift, to see how I will cope working with mentally challenging behaviour people. OK no probs it only means I have stay put for bit longer. So what did I do, Dargaville is not exactly town where is that much to do. I went to a ... read more

We've been here a week now and realizing how fast time is going and how much we wanted to do is not going to happen we make some decisions about what to actually do. We head for the Waipoua Forest as planned but decide that we need to get going east and not spend as much time up north as we had hoped. The Waipoua Forest added another 5% gray hair to both of us. We did not see straight road for hours. We thought we would never get there. The maps are very deceiving as the roads look so easy and straightforward. Town names on the map turn out to be little sign posts indicating a road, as we discovered, and everything is uphill it seems. This country is all up and down. I've never ... read more

Friday morning we Rob told us to see the Kauri Museum on our way to the Kauri Forest and off we went. The Kauri are the giant and probably oldest trees on earth. The museum was great and the examples of trees of yesteryear truly awesome. Besides their size, the Kauri are a gummy tree and the sap that is found in the ground is polished and it look likes clear amber. It was a good break in the drive north but we had to get going. We made it to Dargaville, the last large town where you will find a supermarket and gas, and of course life is not exciting enough so Joshua locks the car keys in the car. Luckily we got roadside assistance when we bought the car. Anyhow, this delays us somewhat ... read more

If you lucky you have friend in all places.... and so I guess I am lucky. Originally planed one night turned into 4nights in Dargaville, I have stayed in parents house of a Kiwi friend back in UK, who just got married ( Congrats to Nat and Elton :o) ..) I was made welcome in Kathy's and Tony's house by Cameron who looked after the house while they were back in UK for Elton's wedding. Cameron took good care of me, fist night took me to a show of Kumarany circus, which is international circus to help disabled people to build their confidence and make them part of the community..., I got introduced to Kate and Steve, lovely people, who have banana eating cow , who I met next day on their farm. I never forget ... read more

"These possums are a plague. Why didn't you kill it?"

Hi there, I just wanted to post some pictures as we have them backed up to disc now. I didn't want to risk losing all of them again. These are mostly New Zealand and some Australia. Sorry about the random order. We are currently in Bangkok, it is everything it is noted for, I have been propositioned by at least 3 different genders here. Hope you enjoy the pics. ... read more

So during all of the "rainy season" in the areas it was supposed to be raining we had near-perfect weather throughout our trip here but this last week has been in the supposedly most-sunny areas of New Zealand and we are officially in summer here and we have gotten the most rain of the trip. We decided to cancel our boat trip which was a bummer but a good idea with the weather. We got to see a lot of movies while in Paihia (the hostel had a good selection of dvd's) and then we headed across to the other coast. There we stayed at a hostel in a small town with absolutely nothing going on in it. In good weather it is famous for enourmous sand dunes which you can "sand-board" down. This is essentially ... read more

Well, we're back, and we really enjoyed our week away. the weather wasn't too good, but when you live in Wales, you get used to that. And it didn't detract from the beauty of the place. So, here we go. First we drove west to Dargaville (all got the maps out?), then turned north up the coast. The whole coastline is sand dunes, but they're so enormous you just think its hills or cliffs. There is a group of lakes hidden behind the sand dunes, blue as can be, with silver sand. The only source of water for them is rain, no streams run into them at all. An absolute playground in summer, but no-one there when we were there, and a chilly wind. We tried to walk around one lake, but the path petered out, ... read more

We left Goat Island campsite and visited the nearby marine reserve. Nice beach views and lots of birdlife in the area. Apparently it is possible to see lots of fish from here, including Snapper, but none visible today! Lovely warm sunny morning but we had quite a long journey ahead up to the east coast to Dargaville - home of the potato! We drove through this area known for its' logging, dairy industries and of course Kumara growing. From Dargaville we headed up to the beautiful Kai lwi lakes with its' sparkling clear turquoise waters fringed with native forest, and white sand, (wish we were here in summer as a great camping site). We then headed up the twisty beautiful road draped in lush rainforest vegetation to the Waipoura Forest. Here we saw the 'Four Sisters', ... read more
