Howdy! We left Auckland on Sunday and we haven't looked back since. Sunday we drove along the coast and ended up at Miranda hot pools. There was a sweet holiday park where we stayed and soaked in the hot spring. This hot spring was developed into a smallish concrete pool. It was not the hottest though it was mineral rich and felt great. On the way to Miranda we stopped to get batteries for our camera and we learned the hard way why brand name batteries are more expensive than the rest. IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE BETTER. At the holdiay park we met a nice older couple from North of AUckland they extended there hoime to us and any help we may need. It turns out these two kind folks Len and Caroline were just ... read more

sweet as....i have my buddy back!! i picked meesh up from the airport yesterday. not before i backed chippy into a ditch on rhondda and john's driveway at 5:30am....oops. here's the story. i got up and out the door at 5:30. understand that this driveway is very very steep....so steep that chippy has to get a little momentum going down the first hill to get up the second. i had my momentum going, but....as i got halfway up the hill i noticed a big branch in the road. so i stopped, put the emergency brake on and got out to move the branch. no sooner did i step out and shut the door chippy started rolling down the hill....backward. needless to say she ended up in a ditch. i had to wake them when i realized ... read more

Hello all I'm back safe and sound in NZ after a week at home back in the States, in New Jersey. My grandfather did pass away so I consider myself very lucky that I was able to go back and be with my family for his last moments. As always, being with my family is a bit intense (especially with so many of us) but it was all in love. I found out quite a bit about the strength of my family and it gave me that much strength to come back quickly. Cait picked me up from the airport and we got back into the swing of things right away. We jet off straight from the airport for Whitianga, a small town on the Coromandel Peninsula. Since it is up north, it is one of ... read more

We've packed a lot into our first full day on the North Island. After landing yesterday, we rented a car and Brian had a crash course (pun intended) in driving on the left side of the street. (He actually didn't crash, but there were a couple of white-knuckle moments). We got lost trying to leave Auckland - it's really confusing to get onto the motorways here, if you're picky about going in the right direction. Once we were headed in the right direction, we drove about two and a half hours to Whitianga, via a very windy, narrow, unpaved road through the mountains. The locals were impressed we took that route, and were doubly impressed to learn that we did it in a little four-door Mazda, rather than a 4-wheel drive. Whitianga is a resort town ... read more

Well howdy folks Thankyou for all your comments, we only get a small amount of time to hop on the internet here - so apologies if we don't respond individually. We've both been having a great time, chilling out and exploring beaches, coves and the wonderful scenary here. This country is stunning, even when it is blowing a gale! The weather has been a tad blowy, yet now settled back down to lovelly sunshine! We have been sand surfing off 90 mile beach, eating plenty of cake and drinking coffee. Been to a water world garden, with kinetic sculpture, gadgets and BIG TOYS!!!! (for those of you who have also been, you know what I mean!!!!) Including a flying fox/deathslide *grin* :-) We are now looking fwd to some sea kayaking around cathedral cove tomorrow, then ... read more

Today has been awesome! I didn't have a great night in the youth hostel, but met up with a small group of people on the bus this morning. Having headed out to a mountain over Auckland for photo opportunities, really spectacular views! We suddenly emerged into green countryside! Stopped in a little place called Tiarua(?) For food, drinks etc, then we carried on to a stunning place called Cathedral Cove, it was a gorgeous sandy beach, with a water fall falling onto the sands. And the sea was the most amazing azure blue colour ever, nothing like the North Sea! Moving swiftly on we arrived in Whitianga and checked into a small hostel that had only been open for 3weeks! Most comfortable beds ever! After checking in we all made our way down to the sea ... read more
