How you goin?! Tauranga had a pretty little town but not much else, so we stayed just one night here. The following day we continued onto Matamata or 'Hobbiton' as it has been known just 30 mins from tauranga. This is where the lord of the rings, hobbit set was filmed - 'The shire'. But it cost an absolute fortune to go on and most of it had been taken apart, so all that was left was empty shells! So we gave it a miss. As Matamata is a small town (Also still pretty), we thought we would carry onto to Hamilton, that afternoon. Hamilton seemed like a really nice town, with some really nice areas to shop, while we were there, the V8 super car race was due to start on the friday and we ... read more

The last time Kaye & I went away we had the help of a bottle of Jamieson's for our inspiration and it worked a treat. Alas, this time there was no Jamieson's (very remiss), but we still had a lovely time, depsite the shoddy weather & my possibly fractured foot. Kaye met me in Tauranga & we drove up to Whitianga, where we haggled with & then stayed at Thelma's. Great motel with a fabulous beach front view, we discovered as we were about to leave. Previously it had been hard to distinguish what we were looking at through the clouds, fog, mist, rain, and the spray that was being blown about by a howling gale. We spent the first day pottering about having coffee, lunch, browsing around the (few) shops of Coromandel town and driving ... read more

We fancied a bit of time alone and especially as Shane's mum & nephew were arriving we though we would get out of Shane's hair for a few days. We hired a car and drove up to Coromandel Peninsula, around 3 hours from Auckland. We were so glad that we did as it was BEAUTIFUL and earnt itself a spot in our top 5 prettiest places we have been so far. We walked along the coastline down to a place called Cathedral cove which has a huge cave/hole in the rock - amazing panoramic views too. Had a picnic overlooking the sea and appreciating the scenery. The next day (aching from the exercise!) we went on a two hour horse trek through the hills - again some amazing scenery - Mum, you would LOOOOOVVVEEE it here! ... read more

Saturday 23rd Woke up to a dry but overcast day, so this looks promising, but as we drive off with our driver 'Purple', it starts to rain and it just gets heavier and heavier. We whizz through the mural town and the much hyped photo stop with the large Lemon and Peroa bottle - I shoud have asked him to stop - just got that blurred image out the window. We get to Thames a bit late, just time to swap onto the other bus, smaller - with our driver Luke. We head into the windy Coromandal hills, see plenty of swollen rivers and things bending in the (we later hear 40 knot) winds. We draw up to a couple of beaches, but miss out on 'Hot Water Beach' - where you can dig your own ... read more

Hello Everyone, Well since my last entry, I stayed at the Apple tree Cottage until Sunday, while I was still there Joe (the Maori Showing us around) took us to Papamoa and we climbed the hill where his ancestors originated from and the climb was pretty high and I almost fell down haha. It wasn't too bad! We also went peppie fishing (Its pretty much a clam), I played a poker tournament in Tauranga and lost but it was still fun. Since we stayed until Sunday the owner of the Hostel came by and started acting like a dragon lady and claiming she never said $50 dollars each a week. She was a crazy lady, but eventually we worked something out (even though she yelled at us and called us "not very good Canadians") but whatever. ... read more

A glorious morning as the weather men promised, so I set off across the ferry to explore the headland the other side of the river. Alex stayed in town a bit and mooched round (lots of steps for the pedometer!). Firstly I walked to whitianga rocks, an old pa site, with lovely views of the estuary and some hidden bays. Then for some reason I decided on the steep and difficult route through the bush over the headland, and it was steep, but managable. Again, wonderful views. On the other side were several lovely beaches, so I sat in the shade of a tree and ate my lunch, wishing I'd brought my swimmers. It was so hot, a change of plan was called for. So I didn't walk to the end of the next headland, but ... read more

This peninsula is to the east of Auckland, and I'd always wanted to come here ever since Uncle George sent us a board game when we were little called "Round new Zealand". It is stunning. we drove up the west coast of ot yesterday, stopping to have a look at some old gold mines. Then across an unsealed road through the mountains - visiting a square Kauri tree on the way, and down to this hostel called most aptly "on the beach". It is exactly. Mercury bay was named by captain Cook as he called in to watch Mercury pass the sun, and this bit of the bay is called Buffalo Bay because a ship of that name was wrecked here, and lies just in front of the hostel, under the water. ... read more

Sick/Happy by Hell is for heroes off the under appreciated Neon Handshake album. Excellent song. But yes i am sick, i got food poisoning a couple days ago (i wont go into details, but its unpleasant) and i haven't shaken it yet; although i did manage to drag myself into town, so i am getting better. I was also sick about 3 weeks ago, when i ate some left over lasagne and got sick from all the cheese. Ha! I'm stuck being vegan for ever as my body can't process cheese anymore! Ok, so i spent 2 very pleasant days in Rotorua (the second of which with a very charming Australian librarian cvalled Rosie) and did a bit of the tourist thing (we went on a coach tour!) and then made my way up to the ... read more

things i must remember about my stay at kauotunu motor camp. a. the name. kauotunu. maybe the spelling. b. dilwin, her husband, and her two adorably cute and crazily hyper boys. c. the family get together and barbecues i was allowed to be a part of. heather and nigel's good bye barbecue. how quickly i was welcomed into a world and a group of friends. d. walking through the campground and doing a double take at the crystal clear stars up in the night sky with nothing to distract from their clear patterns. e. millions of tiny, broken down shells. a colorful, sand mosaic. f. nearly falling off the kauri walk as i inadvertently tried to hike down the side of a cliff that was never intended to be hiked down. that was a close call. ... read more
