Day 71: Saturday, February 6th, 2010 Paihia, New Zealand (Bay of Islands) Per the Contiki brochure: "A day of adventure and fun. The day is yours to enjoy the overwhelming beauty of the Bay of Islands. How about a Catamaran cruise through the "Hole-in-the-Rock", maybe sail to a deserted island for lunch, perhaps travel along Ninety Mile Beach to Cape Reinga at "lands end" or just relax and have a drink with your fellow travelers." I slept like crap all night, kept having a dream that some old man was walking around in our room. Fun! We meet up with Emmo in the wee hours of the morning and there are only about 12 of us wanting to see the service. We start the walk over to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and 30 minutes later we ... read more

Day 70: Friday, February 5th, 2010 Auckland, New Zealand to Paihia, New Zealand. Per the Contiki Brochure: "Today will be the day awesome scenery, great fun and extreme adventure take on new meanings! Meet your Contiki crew and view the beauty of Auckland's famous harbor as we cross the Auckland Harbor Bridge. Heading towards the subtropical region of Northland, we'll explore Parry Kauri Park before checking into our Resort in Paihia. In the evening get to know your fellow travelers during dinner." I'm to meet up with the Contiki group at the Mercure Hotel today. The brochure says we depart at Noon so I'm assuming I need to get there before Noon to fill out forms and what not. I'm all twitchy and ready to get going so I leave my hotel at 10:30am and start ... read more

Ok, this is going to be a long one so I advise you go and make a cup of tea then sit down to read it... NB about photos... I'm going to be back in London for a few days and I'll upload them all. I'm going to take my laptop out with me when I come back so this photo uploading thing stops being so stressful. I also have a few videos. Today was by far my best day in NZ (although it's not really competing with all that much). I woke up super early, the sky was blue which is often a good start. I got on the bus with a bunch of other people and the driver called Spike, who promptly described himself as a "bloody normal Kiwi" and started going through the ... read more

So, an older brother grew up and moved out before I hit teenage years, and then decided to move to the ‘northern depths’ of Norwich, and appeared once a year for the obligatory Christmas visit. About ten years later, one sister arrives in New Zealand, and almost instantaneously receives a mail to say said brother has booked flights to come see (her in) NZ. Whatever the reason behind the flights, said brother has since arrived, travelled, conquered and left again for the now, I believe, defrosted UK. To start, we had previously booked Big Day Out tickets for Auckland. Now this is a one day music festival, which the locals rave about being a hardcore festival, mainly for the young and brave, so we buy tickets. Now, the Auckland date is held at Mount Smart Stadium, ... read more

So today the weather is terrible. It's raining with gale force winds. Great. I was sold this week trip as being a "good way to top up the tan". Yeah, right. My waka canoeing session got cancelled (which was going to include mussels and wine). I may do it later this week. I did a little shopping and browsing for some presents to take home with me. I need to do some laundry. Then this afternoon I'm going to do a 3 hour walk along the coast. I'm sharing a room with 7 people and I had a TERRIBLE night's sleep as a result. There was too much snoring and too many drunken conversations amongst the others. And I went to bed at 9pm!! I don't mind hostels that much, but I'm starting to really feel ... read more

So here I am in the Bay of Islands, and it is absolutely chucking it down with rain. The last two days have been spent toodling around Auckland, hanging out with the guys from the hostel. There were three: John, an American (who replaced Art the American); Lorry, the Finnish Viking (his life plan is to go home and build a house and then he will find a wife); Edouard the Frenchman (otherwise known as Little Frog). We had loads of fun hanging out together, and found this great pub where they had live music. The weather was terrible yesterday so I didn't do much at all apart from pack and sleep. All this travelling is EXHAUSTING. The weather was terrible again today, I took the Kiwi Experience coach up here. Have met a nice Irish ... read more

After a short night sleep we woke up at the Base Hostel in Auckland around 6:30am to catch the bus at 7am. We ate egg, ham and cheese bagel sandwiches from Dunkin Donuts hmmm bagels we miss you. The big green bus then showed up and we were beginning our 19 day adventure around New Zealand. After we stopped at a few more hostels we were on our way north to a small town of 1500 people called Paihia. It is located in the Bay of Islands which contains about 140 islands, not all are inhabited. We made a quick toilet/café stop for anyone who didn’t get breakfast before the early departure. Then again in an hour we made a quick toilet stop. We had to fill out about 5 forms since it was our first ... read more

North Island - Part 1 We kicked off to a less than perfect start in New Zealand. It's funny how Qantas can say your baggage has been “lost” even though they themselves knowingly left it on the tarmac at Sydney! During the 3 days we had to wait we hired a car and spent some time exploring the city. Auckland itself isn't all that stylish and there isn't an abundance of greenery or parks in the city centre, but it's a practical place, and good for shopping, rather than sight-seeing. The coastal scenery and islands around Auckland are beautiful. Our 6 week camping adventure started east of Auckland in the Coromandel Peninsula. The peninsula has all the best bits of New Zealand rolled into a small area. It's got mountains and forests, surrounded by powder ... read more

Most towns in New Zealand have a Maori meaning, like running water or something spiritual like that, or Urenui for example, which means "big cock". But humble little Paihia actually means nothing, jack, zilch. A european settler named the town, actually i lie - with some maori meaning, "pai" means good, and this settler simply after being in the Bay for a bit, stated "its Pai here" and it stuck, with some twisted spelling later as Paihia. This is one small town. Being a beach resort and the wealthy aucklanders summer playground, if it rains - nothing opens. All trade is pretty much in the summer months, and 80% of the town are tourists. Now as always with small towns, there are pro's and cons. everyone seems to know each other, each others business, and in ... read more

Hello from Aotearoa - the land of the long white cloud! As you can see I am now in New Zealand's North Island. I haven't had a chance or the time to update the blog, it's not easy to get access to the internet staying in hostels. Well, NZ has been an interesting trip for me so far. I arrived in Auckland on the 5th - another time zone to get my head around, I am now 11 hours ahead! It was not nice leaving Frances, Derek and the kids! So I decided to treat myself to a nice hotel for a couple of days so that I could organise my bus trip and hostels. (Mel, thanks for the website). Unfortunately the morning I was due to leave for my first leg up to the Bay ... read more
