- Samwise Gamgee RareNaturalPhenomenonWhenIWasLeaving OK, so there's been an abyss in my blogging, and it's time to remedy this. Not that this is being tuned into by millions accross the world but for those few who like to know what an amazing time I am having in the sun when it is cold, wet and windy for you, here's what happened next...
Having had a fantastic Christmas and New Year away from home, I was lucky enough to have Mum and Dad come see me for two weeks in January. I had figgured this would be the best transition and way to leave Paihia and onto the next leg. It wasn't quite as easy as I had hoped. I had slowly but surely come to the desicion that I had to leave. The reasons were solid but I knew I wasn't going to like it. I came to NZ to travell and whereas I felt it important to be somewhere
cool with special folk for Christmas and new year, that time had come and gone. Paihia was to me, truely paradical (if there is such a word). But, and forgive me if i have already said this in a previous blog, I have come to understand that paradise only truely exists within, and you must be able to find it there in order to carry it wherever you go. Sure, there are places of paradise, but to realise that it is actually a choice, to see the beauty in every place, will enable you to be happy where ever you are. The other reason for leaving was that my new, awesome, very cool and exciting job wwas due to begin in auckland on the 22nd, as a werewolf (or Lycan) in Underworld 3!
I had a wardrobe fitting for the movie the day after Mum and Dad were due to arrive in Auckland so thought it a good plan to go and surprise them at the airport, so, hitching a lift with the Kiwi bus, I headed away.
The night previous was the Malibu Beach party and unofficially my leaving gig at the Pipi patch. (Photos on Facebook,
cant bear to sit here for an hour copying and pasting them here!) It was truely an awesome occasion. Woken the next day By the re-arrival of Mad Maddie and a fully clothed dip in the pool and sauna. Clip on Facebook but no link due to colourful language, well done ian... no no, really... After a human made whirlpool and several re-entry dives, food was top of the agenda and Cafe #9 did well enough.
ExampleOfTheUsualMadness Now I knew I was going to be a tad emotional on departure, this place had had such a big impact on me that it was inevitable. Along with missing the family at christmas, the odd video message from the nephew and missing Mel and Griegs wedding, I was gearing up for a Niagra Falls. I did however manage to keep my composure and reluctantly waved bye to a somewhat flattering crowd of gathered friends. Pretty sure though they were just making sure I actually left. I never realised that I would make such close friends with so many people. Some of whom have really had a big impact on me too. Jess, Andi, Lou, Nicky, Jon, Pete, Chris, Adam, Caitlin, Simon,
Brendan, Soul, George, Matt, Jen, Adriana and Lucy, you all rule. I love you and I miss you. I had decide to leave paradise and the time had arrived to do just that.
So, got to the airport with a few hours to kill and tried to not grin stupidly at the deviousness of my surprise for Mun and Dad. Found a pad of paper and wrote out a greeting message for the oldies for when they got in. Result, score and back of the net. Mum was in mild shock and Dad, looking I might add, somewhat surprisingly stylish for the old guy, (a far flung cry from the usual socks on under sandals, pasty white legs, bum bag, ridiculously big video camera, sunburnt nose and white cricket hat) was grinning just as cheshire like as myself! So, great start to their two weeks here with me and we went and checked into the hotel, awesome, mini bar!
The next day I had my wardrobe fitting (which I am afraid I can do no more than merely mention, as I have signed confidentiallity agreements and am not permitted to disclose anything about Underworld 3) and after that

looks painfull guys we took the hire car and headed north. Back to Paihia! Well we figgured it would be great for the folks to see where I had been for 2 monoths and meet the Pipi patch crew. So, having just had my leaving party, I came back. That night the Pipi were having a barbeque with the Jim Beam girls so what a perfect time to introduce Mum and Dad to everyone! Mum was calmy out of her comfort zone and Dad was quite happily in his, when they met the gang in the busy bar. Although it was definatly a first, and one would like to presume, a last, when Jess and I decided to jump on the bar and do the YMCA infront of my folks! Sorry Mum...
We ate out at the Swiss cafe that night and went sailing on the R Tucker Thompson the following day. What a day too. WIndy? OMG! lets just say that Dad was in his element, helming on the way back and at sea in high winds. Mother and myself on the other hand looked at each other rather nervously a few times in the odd force 8 gust! funny thing
winding down
nicky n simon happened that day too. We had a lunch break and went ashore to Urapukapuka island and spent the entire hour head down, beach combing, for things I could make into jewellery. I now have a box of shells that i'm planning on stringing up and selling cheaply to other travellers. And here was I thinking one of the reasons to leave edinburgh was to get away from my past line of work! Seems you can take the boy out of the jewellery...
So, once again I said goodbye to everyone, felt like I was begining to milk it by this stage. But it was much harder to leave in this manor than I had anticipated. You see, from having no-one but myself to think about, I had to start putting Mum and Dad first, and to do that in my space and comfort zone, whilest removing myself from it, was decidedly difficult. Suffice to say, the odd calm and rational word from Nicky, along with a few Jack Daniels, sorted me out. And for the 3rd time, I said goodbye to Paihia.
