Milford Sound was absolutely stunning, with giant rock formations carved out by the glaciers. I decided to chill there for 2 nights and get away from the drink and give my body a rest. First day I kind of spent the afternoon sleeping as I'd stayed up the night before watching Man Utd vs West Ham which finished at 3am and I had to get up for a 7am bus ride. Next day I did the boat cruise around the fiordland and was just looking and natures beauty. They say it's better when it's raining as you see millions of waterfalls, I saw it in the sun and cloud and I still thought it looked amazing. Managed to capture a rainbow across the rocks (never went to get the gold). Apart from the cruise I was ... read more

We spent our last few days in New Zealand on the Routeburn Track, a 3 day hike that takes you from the Queenstown area to the Milford sound area. It takes you through unbelievable river valleys, over rocky passes and along very narrow ridges. Aside from the horrible, torrential, hike- ruining, and view-destroying rains that occured all day on Day #2, it was a wonderful trek - like luxury 4 star hike compared to the Everest trek. At the end of the hike, we were picked up by a bus and taken to the Milford sound for lunch and a cruise. After a 5 hour bus ride back to Queenstown, we packed up our stuff and prepared to head back to Australia.... read more

Le premier ... read more

We were up for an early start and after staying up late drinking, it was tough to make the 6.30am bus. Our next destination was the Tongariro National Park, which involved a 19km walk through the volcanic landscape. We all decided to do it and our group was starting to split and I was at the back of our group of about 8 as one of the girls was struggling and I didn't want to leave a man behind. But after her second time of trying to sort some blisters out she decided to go back to the start. So i walked really fast up the stairs to try and catch the others only to see another from our group struggling, so caught a breather and made sure she was ok. She managed to get to ... read more

Great Walk #2. Kepler was everything that Routeburn wasn’t. The weather finally turned in our favour and it was fantastic. Kepler is one of the few tracks in New Zealand that is planned in a loop, so you don’t have the transport headaches at the start and finish. Despite this, we did cheat a little bit and took a boat at the start which saved us a couple of hours and 6km of trees. We’re so glad that we did because we arrived at the Luxmore Hut with enough time to summit Mt Luxmore while the weather and views were good. The alpine views were absolutely awesome and we finally felt redeemed after Routeburn. From the top of Luxmore, we could see a storm front blowing towards us so we raced down ahead of it and ... read more

Feb. 10, 2011 - Brewster Hut After Stewart Island, we took a few well deserved rest days. Setting out from Invercargill, we went northwest through Dunedin. There, we toured the Speight's Brewery, the makers of the most popular beer in the South Island. This was a fabulous experience (the free sampling at the end of the tour was especially enjoyable!). It's a entertaining and enlightening tour. From there we spent an evening in Queenstown, and then headed to Wanaka to plan our next set of adventures. Along the way, we stopped at a winery and sampled some wines. This is something I could get used to. Never been to a vineyard before, and I enjoyed that. I bought us a bottle of wine to enjoy with dinner. The hostel we stayed at had a staff birthday, ... read more

Routeburn Track 3/2-6/2 English (Lisa) To say that it was raining when we drove from Milford Sound to the start of the Routeburn track is an understatement. It was rather as if the sky was continuously emptying buckets full of water. Luckily, heavy rain results in the most spectacular views in Fiordland. Many mountains are just bare rocks with hardly any trees on them, so the water has nowhere to go but to stream down them in the form of big waterfalls. While Erik and Jean were in complete awe in the front of the care, us two in the backseat were also slightly worried: we were about to start the Routeburn Track. The Routeburn Track is one of the nine ‘Great Walks’ in New Zealand. It’s 32 km long and the track goes through both ... read more

Friday 4th February – Sunday 6th February ...I said as we turned up the access road to Franz Josef Glacier. Maybe not ice-bergs but there were indeed chunks of ice coming down the Waiho River. We were spending a couple of days in Glacier Country. There are over 140 glaciers flowing from the Southern Alps, but only two (Franz Josef and Fox) reach the temperate climate of the lower rainforests. The terminal faces are only about 250m above sea level. Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are unusual in that they are amongst the few in the world that are advancing rather than retreating (Fox Glacier has been advancing since 1985, see the photo showing how Franz Josef has retreated over the years, though it is advancing now). This is due to the West Coasts high annual ... read more

After our kayaking trip and 4 nights of very limited sleep and hard work actually staying pointing in the right direction in the canoe, (and also trying to keep my teeth) we decided to stay in a lodge. We where kindly dropped off by our Kayaking company at the National Park. The kayaking company Blazing Paddles comes highly recommended for the whanganui river. Fantastic service and we even got a cake at the end!!! (lucky i didnt loose my teeth on the branch!!) The weather was crap for a couple of days but we needed rest and our lodge had acess to a jacuzzi............ Well finally, after waiting a couple of days for the weather to clear and the winds to drop we had a window of opertunity to do the much spoken about Tongario crossing. ... read more
