Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas 2023!! The Marquesas Islands…. A trip we have looked at for a couple of years and finally decided to do it! It was the year of the every 4 year Matava’a O Te Femua Enata or The Marquesas Islands Arts Festival. Started in 1986 to promote cultural exchanges between the 6 Marquesas islands. And it was fascinating! We attended 2 of the 4 days of it which included multiple dance troupes, a communal lunch and several evening shows. The 12 day cruise on the Aranui is a combination freighter/passenger boat. The front third of the boat is loaded with the cargo including multiple shipping containers, forklifts, pickup truck and 2 buses to shuttle us to the festival sites. Fatu Hiva Feb 15th 2009 Small island known for wet weather, wood carvings and engravings and tapa. We stopped at Omoa and at Hanavave between 9 am and 4 pm; I like 2 stops as between visits to different parts of the island, we get back on board and I use the pool to uncook myself. Yesterday somebody said it was 34 degrees Celsius and to that add humidity, even my legs are sweating. Today we saw tapa being made from the bark of banyan tree and flower bouquet made with ylang-ylang, mint, basil, tiare, etc and tied with a string of pineapple segments sprinkled with sandal wood dust; it ends up to be the size of a pound of butter, ladies twirl their long hair around it and it smells wonderful. Greetings from the Marquesas,What you say? What happened to the Galapagos, Los Pearlas? Well, we left Panama mid February and got to Isla Contadora, made famous for South American leaders conferences and the rich and famous including the late Shah of Iran who had a house here. The weather was sort of grey and we rapidly moved to the south of the group to await a “window” of weather to make the crossing. We’d hooked up with an Aussie cat “Shamara”and on the call of their weather router took off. Our grib files looked fairly good as well , however they lied and we motored for all but about a 20 hour sail arriving in San Cristobal 7 days later. Well we have now completed our big Pacific Crossing and are in Fatu Hiva in the Marquesas. We also have a new crew member on board Marga so we are five again only this time the women outnumber the men, Yes dad is surrounded by females again storey of his life.
