Well Fiji was fantastic for us and as I'm sure everyone knows by now its where we got engaged!! Absolutely thrilled and very excited. It was all very romantic indeed. We went on a 2 day cruise to "Tivua Island" on Valentines Day and we were the only people staying on the island (apart from the chef & 2 caretakers). It was a true paradise. So peaceful, never experienced anything quite like it. The island was small and beautiful. It would only take you about 5 minutes to walk around it. The island is surrounded by 500 acres of tropical coral. Very pretty. We stayed in a "bure" which looked out onto the ocean. I swear, the beach & ocean were our front garden. We had a little front deck which was a lovely place to sit and read a book while listening to the waves lapping. I thought I was Queen Muck! That evening we went out kayaking around the island. It was so much fun as we had never done it before and it was just the two of us. Anyway, that night we watched the sunset on the other side of the island. It was so nice and
peaceful. You wouldn't have a care in the world here. After that it was time for Jack and Cilla to welcome us in the "Kava Ceremony". That was alot of fun and we both tried the Kava. Not as bad as we thought it would be. It is basically a drug or something made from roots of a plant which they drink but it is a tradition and meant to offend if you dont drink it. Its a nice tradition as it is them welcoming us into their family. We were then served our dinner under the stars on our deck. Very nice. We listened to Jack playing his guitar and singing to us for a while. A real Feejee experience. Then they left and we both went for a stroll under the light of the full moon along the beach. Thats when Darren took the ring out from his pocket and got down on one knee and proposed!! Couldn't beleive it and was delighted. Couldn't have dreamt of a more romantic and special way to be proposed to.Ahhhhh....
Fiji in general was very good. The first thing we noticed when we were on our way on an old
rickety bus to "The Beachouse Backpacker Resort" was how green it was. We didnt quite expect that. Also noticed that it is quite poor judging by the houses etc. The people were always so nice and welcoming. Always had a big smile on their faces. The Beachouse was great. Very good for a backpacker place. Our garden room was pretty. It had a hand woven roof and was just a step or two from the beach. We spent most of our days just lazing around on the hammocks, reading our books, making coconut jewelery, playing table tennis, watching the sunset over the ocean and having a laugh with the other guests. Oh and I also got a Fijian massage. Head to toe for just FJ$20 which is like 10 euro. It was lovely and very relaxing. Had to go for a snooze after it. The climate here though was very hot and humid so you couldn't really do much else other than relax...oh what a tough life!!!;-)
We also went on a trip from here to a Fiji rugby tournament in Nadi. The trip was very unique! Travelled the 2 hour trip the way the Fijians do..in the back
of a yute on wooden benches. What an odd experience but good to do but man did our butts hurt! We watched some of the matches and then went for some releif from the heat to get food in air con building. Then we went back and watched the remainder of the matches. The matches were 7-a-side, 15 minute long and very high paced rugby. Was very good and it was funny to hear all the fijian people around us getting so into it. Was good to experience a bit of Fijian culture.
On our last day it was an early start as it was "Skydive Fiji baby" day! Woohooooo...!! OH MY GAWD!!! What a FANTASTIC experience. We will definately do that again. I got a DVD of me so I was the first to take the plunge. Wasn't very nervous until about 2 mins before the jump when I was tapped on the shoulder to get attached to the expert. Then the door opened and out we went! What a feeling at first..fright or terror mixed with pure adrenalin as we fell from the plane. And then just pure awe and excitment. Felt like I was flying. After
the 30 second freefall and the schute opened it was so unbeleivably calm and the views were amazing. Loved every seconnd and worth every penny! After me it was Darren's turn and he seemed a little nervous but he said he couldn't back out as I had done it. I told him he would love it and then off he went. When I heard the plane overhead and knew he must be about to jump I searched the sky for him. But sure didnt I hear him well before I saw him as he was "woohooing" out of him and I just knew he was loving it. He landed with a huge smile on his face. Thrilled he done it and wants to do it again.
One of the main things that we loved about Fiji was its "Fiji time"! They live by it and we managed to settle into it very quickly. It'll be hard to get back to normal pace. Their motto sums the island up perfectly, "Don't worry, be happy"!!
Sorry no pix at the mo as there seems to be a problem with our PC. WIll try again soon.
