On the 16th of February it was bye bye Fiji and hello USofA! The flight was 10 hours to LAX and we had to live the 16th twice as there was a 20 hour time difference between Fiji and LA! Messed up our heads a bit. Once we landed we made our way directly to San Diego via Greyhound!
The first few days in San Diego was very quiet as we were so wrecked and jet lagged. It is a nice city though and pretty laid back which we liked. We walked around it a lot and visited "Balboa Park". It is a lovely park and it has a stage with a massive organ on it. We saw a play there, which was free and very good way to spend an afternoon. We also saw here International Houses so we got to learn a little bit of different cultures. Very interesting.
From San Diego we went down to Tijuana in Mexico for the day. Just 45 mins on the trolley to the border. It was an experience to behold. Quite a crazy place. Quite similar to Bangkok the way people harrass you for your money. It was amazing the
way just over one wall, the differences in culture and people. It was fun though and we got a few cheap bits there. On the way back to the border we stopped at a wee restaurant and got ourselves some mexican food and also a gorgeous Margarita for just $3...the nicest I have ever had...yum! Also got a $1 Corona...great stuff!
After that it was time to cross the border again and when we got there we saw hundreds of people queueing. We didn't know for sure what for so Darren asked these people way up the queue and they said it was to cross the border. Luckily for us these people told us to jump in with them. They had been queueing for over three hours at this stage and the queue had only got bigger. So thanks to them we saved about 4 hours. It was crazy to see people renting bikes just to skip queues as there was a seperate bike lane. Was mad to see these fully grown adults on little kiddies bikes...and some even with no saddles!!!!
We were in San Diego for about 5 days and then it was back to LA.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed San Diego as a city. The climate was SOOOO much better. It had a little chill to it even though the sun was shinning...so good to have!
While in LA we stayed out at Venice Beach. At first we though it was very far out but while we were here we discovered that we had chose one of the best spots to stay. The beach and area surrounding it is lovely and well kept. You see some strange people here but they seem harmless. Santa Monica is just 3 miles away and we liked this place a lot. Very touristy. While here in LA I officially turned old, much to my dismay, as I celebrated my birthday here. On this day we went on a tour of: Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Beverley Hills, Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, Movie Star Homes and the walk of fame and LA. Had a great day. Its unreal the amount of money in Beverley Hills....such a different world to ours. Huge houses and expensive cars, the obscene prices of clothes on Rodeo Drive. Was cool to visit here as I love "Pretty Woman" and I got to see the
shop where Julia Roberts was declined service. Cool. Oh and we also went to the toilet in The Regent Beverley Wiltshire!! Classy!! Bit too up market for us backpackers. We visited "Wangs" on the walk of fame. This is where all the footprints and handprints of stars are. We found Johnny Depps and that made my day. Of course had to take a photo of this. Got a photo taken of me with Elmo. We also visited the Theatre where the Oscars take place. Its busy getting ready for the Oscars on 5th March.
Yesterday we visited a theme park called "Six Flags - Magic Mountain". Had a great day. The rides were awesome. Around 12 out of this world rollercoasters...most of which had a different twist! Scarey stuff. Darren was in his element, running from one to the other. We were lucky as there were almost no queues...apart from "X" which we queued for 1.5 hours and then when we were almost there, we were told that the ride had broke down. Very dissapointed and a waste of valuable ride time but this ride was also one that Darren really wanted to do...:-( But was a very very
very very good day. We were exhausted after it. Best theme park we have ever visited.
Tomorrow we leave LA and go to Las Vegas baby! Cant wait. Should be great fun.
