Bula, welcome to Fiji!
In Fiji we went on a relaxing 12 days cruise and island hop around the Yasawa islands. Sun, Sea and Sand.
Kuata
We did some shark diving with the locals one morning which was awesome! They speared some reef fish and ripped them up to attract the white tipped reef sharks which are harmless to humans and actually really friendly! The locals could grab them so we could touch their skin which was pretty quality! We all came back with 2 arms and 2 legs satisfied with our mornings dive.
The night time was fairly relaxed here with music to accompany conversation and cards. We did one night get treated to a dance ceremony but the CD was messed up so they just all started laughing which was very professional! A good laugh though and our introduction to the Bula dance!!
Long Beach
By the time we had reached our next port of call the clouds had cleared leaving us with nothing more than 100% Fijian sunshine which certainly brightened the mood and got the Fiji adventures well and truely under way! The resort was very simplistic with me and
Rick being put in a tiny shack with sand floor and made to share a double bed which was very cosy in the warm sticky evenings.
On this resort there was little more to do other than chill. Well, this is pretty much the story of the entire country as it is just about the only thing people do!
Sunrise Beach
We were greeted by an overfriendly large Fijian man who went by the name of 'Queen'. And yes, he was gay and proudly introduced us to his boy/girlfriend called 'Deborah'! The rule on this island was to simply keep smiling and these people were perhaps some of the happiest people you could imagine! Always laughing, singing and dancing they really do love the life the lead and whos to blame them when they live in paradise?
From here we did the cave diving which was yet another Fijian experience with the locals. We took a short boat ride to some of the hundreds of underwater caves in the Fijian islands and put our masks on then jumped in. The caves were pretty huge and we had to dive down and swim through a tunnel to
get into the main labarinth of the caves. From within there it was pitch black and any noise echoed like crazy! It was a good laugh and we got some decent chants going!
The sunrise beach itself actually wasnt too good by Fiji standards. So, we took the short walk over the island to Blue Lagoon which is one of the best beaches I have seen so far. Here the snorkelling was
awesome and we came across some tiny reef sharks and some very friendly Nemo fish which are the best!
At night we played some games, learnt some dances and were enlightened by Queen as to his famous connections with Opra Winfrey and what seems like the rest of Hollywood. He knows them all through his previous work on one of the expensive Fiji islands nearby where all the A list celebs go on vacation!
Wanataki cruise
Included in our island hopping pass was a 2 night stay onboard the Wanataki cruise boat. This was probably the most fun 2 nights in Fiji as we were with a good group of people, there were plenty of things to do in the daytime and at night
it was also lively!
By day you could either take it easy and sunbathe. Or, you could go snorkelling, kayaking or jump off the side of the boat in any manner you chose which was a great laugh! The air conditioned dorm was really awesome and even graced with warm showers!
I was persoanlly happy to get a few backflips off the side of the boat, even not all of them were perfect! I also added winning the quiz and Musical chairs to my resume of success in bars! As a prize I won a FMU which a few of you out there may be able to guess what this stands for, answers on a postcard.
Manta Ray island
This was the island which we were mostly docked near on the cruise so we had kayacked over one afternoon. This was probably the most developed island we visited. Although it wasnt as authentically Fijian it was good for a bit more comfort. Plus we had Sky so we got to watch the All Black batter England and then Russia beat Holland. The island had a great buzz and was quite lively throughout the day with a
great game of volleyball going down! Champions!
South Sea island
This was our last stop on the islands of Fiji and we had 2 nights here. Certainly the smallest island we stayed on as you could literally throw a stone from one side to the other! Regardless of the size it was quite full of people which made it a good social.
The daytime was filled with a great voyage on the Seaspray yacht which cruised the blue waters giving out great BBQ food and all you can drink beer! We visited a traditional village for a Cava ceremony which I was honoured to be a part of as I represented our "tribe" and the island where the Tom Hanks film Castaway was filmed which was really cool. The day was great and by mid noon we were all drowsy from the sun and beer!
Fiji was amazing and the people were all so friendly. Although the sun and sand was awesome and it was great to soak up the beach for a few days, I think the best part of the islands was the people. If people at home were this nice there would
be no problems and everyone would be alot happier.
Fiji Time, All the Time!
