We got up pleased that we had a whole day of doing nothing ahead of us. I know that we’ve had plenty of those sorts of days over the last two months, but over the last week it has been different as Matt has been doing his diving course, I’ve not been well or we’ve been on trips. We’ve missed just hanging out together and snorkelling and laying on the beach and that is how we planned to spend our entire day. We started with a late breakfast - 8.30am which was a massive lay in compared to normal. We were the only ones in the bar eating as everyone else had long been and gone. Before we’d even finished it started to rain so our hopes of getting on the beach started to look slim. ... read more

After breakfast we headed out on a boat trip to the caves. It seemed like a popular trip and we’d met other people who’d said it was good so we had high hopes for it, especially seeing as we’re limiting the trips we do to try to conserve money (shame we’re don’t have the same will power when it comes to dinners and eating expensive fillet steaks!) We got in the boat with a family from New Zealand who we’d been chatting to over breakfast. The speedboat then headed around the corner to collect a couple of girls from the Sunrise resort. I heard them chatting on the bench behind me and recognised the accent straight away. I asked them where they were from and I was right; they were from Lincoln. Not only that but ... read more

I was feeling better still today so we headed down to breakfast together before Matt headed off for the final day of his course. I sat in the lounge area reading, as I still didn’t feel up to sitting in the sunshine yet. Above my head I saw a big spider with a white body, hanging in his web. I moved seats quickly so that I was no longer sitting underneath him and took some pictures, then I thought it only fair to tell reception so that he didn’t fall on anyone. One of the workmen came and hooked him onto a broom and then gently grabbed him in his hands and placed him in a tree over one of the hammocks. I was pleased he didn’t squash him as I didn’t want to be responsible ... read more

Matt headed down for breakfast and came back up with some fruit and toast for me. At least that was easy to carry up the hill. I actually managed a slice of dry toast and realised the worst of the bug was thankfully over. Matt headed off for another dive; I spent the day in bed reading. His second day of diving went well. This time it was Matt, Manie and another girl who was doing the last dive of her course, and there were also a group of certified divers too. Matt, Manie and the girl went off on their own so that he could test them on some things again. They saw lots of fish including stingrays and a shark (although unfortunately Matt missed this as he was probably too busy doing acrobatics somewhere). ... read more

We woke up bright and early ready for Matt to head to the dive shop. I didn’t feel good and before we’d even got dressed I’d been sick. Thinking the worst was over we went down to breakfast. Matt headed off to watch more videos and I went to the beach with my book thinking that it would do me good to just lay and read for a while until I felt better. A few minuets later Matt walked out of the dive shop in a wetsuit ready to take his first dive - at least he didn’t have to watch more videos after all. I later found out that he was asked to get out of the boat and swim 200m without fins in the lagoon. He’d been expecting and dreading this part because as ... read more

We woke up pleased that we could go to breakfast when we wanted rather than being called by the drum. It opened at 8am and as Matt’s Padi course started at 9am we headed straight down. After we’d eaten Matt headed off for the day. It was strange - we’ve been together all day every day for the past two months and saying goodbye for the day felt very strange. He headed off to watch his diving videos for the day. I sat in the comfy area of the dining room and started reading my book. After a while the sun looked too inviting so I headed to the beach. It was almost empty, so was the lagoon, so I just divided my time between swimming and laying. I felt sorry for Matt cooped up in ... read more

Steve: Fiji!!! A perfect place to finish our trip before NZ and a return to work and relatively normal live. We arrived at 5.15am from LA pretty tired after the long flight and having lost 2 days to the international date line. We were able to check in really early to our hostel at Smugglers Cove in Nadi which was great and sit on our balcony and see the sun come up. The hostel was really nice with a great restaurant and really nice rooms. The weather was perfect, its winter in Fiji at the moment so the temp is only about 28/29 degrees and it cools off in the evening a bit. So it wasn't too hot like Costa Rica. We spent the first day relaxing in the sun as we had booked an island ... read more

Hello again from New Zealand, we wanted to post some pictures from Fiji while we can and give an update on NZ. We arrived into the South Island Jan 14 on a ferry that I think is called the Good Ship Nausea. Pretty windy and rough I hear (I slept the whole 3.5 hours in a Gravol induced coma). I am really amazed at the beauty of this country, everywhere you go there is something very beautiful to see and do. Back to Fiji, we had a great time in Fiji and have uploaded a few images I hope to do some more once I find a better way to upload. We could have spent more time Fiji but it is very expensive and we would have to come home before easter. The islands, the fantastically ... read more

(Note - Originally written 11th December but unable to publish until now due to internet difficulties) Bula, Bula and Thrice Bula. A warm greeting from the South Seas When we arrived at our previous Island (Manta Ray) we were somewhat surprised to see all the other guests checking out, storm shutters being put up and to have the receptionist ask us three times " are you sure you want to stay here?' More of that later................ Anyway, since our last blog we have been travelling up the Yasawa islands. Our first port of call was Wayalailai Eco Haven, about 2 hours from the mainland by catamaran. The resort is essentially an extension of a Fijian village so we got to know the locals well. They are unbelievably genteel. Very quietly spoken and courteous. It's a bit ... read more
